Oh well, with the advent of OWI being the first recognised NQI grade I suppose that the time for people like me had to come eventually, not that it has yet, but the writing has got to be on the wall. I did my CI, then did the OWIC, but that damn form... I lost mine ages ago! Never could be bothered to actually log the hours anyway despite teaching in OW. Yes ? I?m =STILL= a CI!

So now I get a very nice letter from Sean Gribben (OWI Chief Examiner) inviting me to take that next step and become an OWI. I would like to, there?s even the option for a branch officer to verify ?this guy has done the hours? and that I?d actually done the required 12 hours despite my lack of record keeping. Great idea ? my personal problem there is that since the BSAC found ?something else? for me to do I?ve been a member of BSAC Direct and dropped out of the branch training side of things. It?s been a bit here, a bit there, helping out if I could, nothing logged of course!

Right ? extractum digitum time I feel, I REALLY need to get around to being one thing or another. I would like to start formally logging the 12 hours, and/or get some practice in so that I can do the OWI assessment, I might even do both. But as a member of BSAC Direct that is a tad difficult as it isn?t a training branch.

So... any branches out there in need of a hand with their OW training? I?m a DL/CI, around 250 ish dives, quite docile and not in the habit of biting trainees. I?m located in Stansted, Essex ? south cost is doable as a day trip, certainly as far as Swanage, might be tempted for a weekend but days would be better right now. There is of course Gildenpit and Stoney, either of those are possible, or your own favourite training pit within my range.

If there?s any branches who could do with the assistance of a (slightly rusty) CI to help with their training then drop me an email. I wont let on if you don?t if you don?t want me to, we wouldn?t want to worry the trainees would we :-)

Thanks in anticipation

Shhhh!! Can we keep this between ourselves Nigel? If people find out that Council members actually go diving it will ruin our image!

Hi Keith

We train at Leybourne Lakes outside Maidstone, so i suspect an easy drive for you. Our TO is always after instructor assistance so if you are happy with it i will pass him your details.

We have a big backlog at the moment he is trying to clear, mainly OD but few SD lessons.

We also train off Dover and Herne bay if you want to get some time in there, weather has put the mokers on that lately.

I know Medway 59 are also often after help in the same area.

Thanks Paul! Sounds pretty ideal actually. I'll drop you an email with my contact details, give me a shout next time you're having a training day and I would love to come along if I can.

Thanks for the emails as well folks, all emails will be answered of course.

Keith glad to see someone else is in the same boat as me. My problem is I left my previous club the day the letter came, don't suppose the DO would verify my training plan now.

I suppose it depends on the terms of your leaving, ask Sean wether it would be OK for a previous DO (or even DO's?) to verify it for you. Failing that... come on in :-) They're a good bunch on here, I've had a few invites so far and I hope to be taking up some of them. Anything that gets me away from the damn keyboard... ;-)

I don't know how many of us there are stuck in this situation, I know that Sean has written to us all with his gentle prod and encouragement. It worked here, I'm up for it, so feel free to join in - that goes for any other CI's as well!
