I wonder how many extended range divers actually dive ''extended range dives''?

The Extended Range course was excellent fun. Mostly spent playing with some spiny lobsters, on account of some narcosis ;). Trimix is the way to go for 40+m dives.
Having said that I frequently dive twins and one stage during the summer months

As you know Ian,I went down the DSAT Tecdeep route and have the TMX50. The trouble is,now I cannot find anyone, beyond my instructor, who is superb but busy, to dive with. I have plenty of guys to dive with for ''recreational' dives. I just wonder if this is a common problem. I quite agree with the trimix beyond 40m.

Trimix beyond 40 is becoming quite common. Others even consider Air below 30m an unacceptable risk.

The issue with Extended Range Diving is not necessarily diving to your limit on every dive. The course gives you skills and experience which enriches your very day diving. Just because you are allowed to dive that deep doesn't mean you should on every dive.

It also depends on your environment. Deep technical diving in europe is challenging environment and not many people are interested in doing long decompression in it. If you look at other environments around the world which are tropical or warmer you'll find a increased amount of technical diving happening every day.

I also think there is a misconception about extended range which is it shouldn't be looked as depth diving but more about diving longer with increased ability to accelerate your decompression. The only thing you get from depth is access to new sites and increased decompression obligation.

There's a club up in yorkshire running scapa trips in April, that's a good way to get you're diving in with other technical divers. http://www.recandtech.co.uk/ the owner, Andy Cavell is an BSAC Extended Range instructor and perhaps he can shed some more light on the topic and get your connected with divers who are going out and doing extended range diving frequently.
