View Full Version : University branches.
Is there an official BSAC policy on joining Uni branches(i.e. only staff or students can join) or is this decided at branch level?
Thanks all
Peter

In most Uni branches who joins is governed by who pays.
So if it's Sports, Faculty or SU then they would of course want
there money spent on there students.
However some clubs operate a policy where a non-student member
can join as long as the fee reflects the Uni subsidy. On
average this would mean a membership fee of about two thirds
more of the student one. Dont forget a student gets reduced BSAC
membership as well, so the non-student ends up paying a lot
more.
Of course each Uni has it's own rules and you really have to
look at each club individually.
There is also an issue with non-competitive Sports, which can affect funding as in Manchester Uni's case.

Thanks Terry,
I had realised I'd probably pay more than the students. It was because the nearest BSAC to me is Glasgow Uni and I had been wondering if there was a blanket policy from the big, chief, heejins at HQ or if it was on a branch basis. I guess it's a branch basis.

Peter, most university branches are "special branches", meaning the membership is not open to the general public. Other special branches might be those associated with a company or the armed forces, for example. The branch Bye-Laws will specify who can become a member. In the case of a university, it will usually be members of the university (i.e. students, graduates and staff) and possibly outsiders who are helpful (e.g. instructors). As Terry says, university sports clubs often receive funding from the university, disbursed by a sports union or similar, who may impose restrictions.
