I am thinking of going to Egypt to learn to dive with my husband. However I have lymphoedema in one leg and a Urostomy. Would either of these conditions prevent me from learning to dive.I am 48 yrs old, and female

Hi,
I the only thing you can do is contact a medical referee and discuss your condition with that person. A complete list of medical referee's can be found in the medical section.

I am not a medical man but one consideration might be suseptibility to lymphatic DCI. These are generally not very serious events but they do not respond to recompression treatement, at least as far as the symptoms are concerned. By this I mean that swelling caused by a lymphatic bend does not disappear with recompression treatment. However, this swelling usually goes down in a few days.
I have seen one such event, a lady in her late fifties, where the casualty's upper arm became very swollen. Over the following 48 hours the swelling travelled from the upper arm to the forearm and then the hand before subsiding. It wasn't particularly painfull but was uncomfortable for the casualty. The worst part was having to remove the wedding ring for the first time in 38 years!
The worry would be that any bubbles trapped in the tissues might migrate to somewhere more serious.
It is definately worth consulting your nearest medical referee I would suggest.
