Hi All
I am starting to read Liddiards book as per title, but are there any areas where current understanding differs significantly from what he published, and if so, pointers to more up to date references would be appreciated.
Cheers
Graham

Do you mean Lippman?

There is a revision of the book "Deeper into sport diving". The original has some innaccuracies but I think (IIRC) its still got a lot of good stuff.

Try one of the technical titles afterwards like Kevin Gurr's "technical diving from the bottom up" to get a balance.

Ignore what he wrote about the BSAC '88 tables. He's completely wrong.

This forum has the most up-to-date stuff on the BSAC '88s, courtesy of Tom Hennessy himself!

John Lippmann wrote a number of books on diving. The "Deeper into Diving" came out in 1992 or so and at that time was quite a revelation. Some of the issues have moved on a long way since then - particularly the technical scene and the computers. Something like 10-15 years later, much still remains worth reading, even as a primer for more recent stuff. Kevin Gurrs book and Rob Palmers book on technical diving are well worth a read and are both more up to date. Particularly Kevin Gurrs book is fully up to date. As a summary of the 2-3 real diving medical texts, Lippmanns book covers the must know stuff well without getting too technical. His recommendations on dive profiles certainly changed my diving for the better. Gary Gentiles books on extreme wreck diving are worth a read too and are in parts a candid relevation about the posibilities and realities of deep wreck diving.

Incidentally the magic of the BSAC tables is their format, allowing the dive time to be checked in the shallows at the end of the dive - this makes the gentle profiles favoured by Lippmann possible even at altitude and even with nitrox and without conversion calculations. For most sport diving profiles - if the ascent rate is kept inside the table there should be no concern about their safety.

Yes, Lippman, sorry.
Thanks to you and all for input. I can feel the plastic taking a whacking!
Must dash, off to Plymouth :-))

Hi Graham

Yeah OK - Lippman. The stuff on the 88s is wrong. No one uses them so its just a boring scuba argument on forums and over a beer...

Glad to see Kev's book is well liked!! Try also Bob Cole's "Decompression Matrix" for more on that subject.

Best
