Hi,

I'm interested to know and would like to hear from Divers who have Diabetes or know some one and can continue to dive.
One of our club members who is a Sports Diver with about 40 dives completed has just been diagnosed with Diabetes.
He is obviously booked in for a Medical now but any advise from experience would be helpful.

There is ongoing research, have a look at DDRC.

Hi I have be a DD for many years, your guy will need to see his Consultant who will primarily make the decision on when he starts diving again, once he has things under control that shouldn't be a problem (guess he is on insulin?) If he needs any help or advice give me a shout.
Just to make the point ther are more than a few highly qualified divers and instructors that are active within the BSAC, SO NO PROBLEM! GO FOR IT

I have type 2 as well, diagnosed last year, not on insulin, I take a pill a day. I'm under GP control, not consultant, had a medical with my local referee (Pete G), then you go on Chris Edge's research register.
Diabetic diving was originally banned after a diver's death was, now considered incorrectly, attributed to his diabetes. That unfortunate accident is now thought to be PFO related. Thanks to Chris and his teams research, and a slightly helping occurence of National Instructors with it but keeping quiet, the ban was lifted some years ago and we can dive (according to some articles I found on the web, http://www.ukdiving.co.uk/ukdiving/info/medicine/diabetes.htm). Diabetes is not uncommon, Diabetes UK say that around 1.5% of the population is diagnosed along with another that isn't. 3% of the population is a fair few.

Once registerd with Chris he will send you some guidelines and a form for your DO. You need to have a medical each year and provide Chris with some research material to help the cause (glucose levels pre and post dive etc).
If like me you have type 2 after family genes caught up with me, and are fit, you shouldn't have any problems. I'm just back from a deep south Red Sea trip, diving carries on.
