View Full Version : Diving in Tahiti.
Hi everyone,
for our honeymoon, we'll go to Tahiti :) and my husband is keen on diving, so to please him, i told him i'll join him but the thing is that i don't know how to dive and i'm a bit scared of the depth. actually i prefer snorkelling but he seems so happy about it, i don't want to disappoint him already! :(
does anyone know some hotels there where they have good scuba divers teachers because i was checking on http://hotel.twenga.co.uk/search_hotel.php?qz=tahiti and on http://www.booking.com/ and there are no specifications about diving.
it'll be nice to have some tips about diving there.
thanks a lot! :)

May I suggest (if time permits) that you do a BSAC course with a club immediately adjacent to you (http://www.bsac.com/page.asp?section=2164)? With a bit of organisation you should then be able to do the Open Water part in Tahiti and this will save you all those horrid classroom/pool hours you would otherwise spend at your holiday destination - with hubby twiddling his thumbs. Unfortunately it seems that there is no BSAC Centre in Tahiti which could let you do that but, fear not, there is a solution.
The BSAC Training Centres (http://www.bsac.com/page.asp?section=939§ionTitle=BSAC+Training+Centres) are professionally run and therefore cost about as much as the training by most other organisations. That's the bad news, the cost. The good news is that you qualify about as quickly as the other Agencies and you are therefore fully qualified by the time you get to Tahiti which is, or should be, the point of the exercise.

Just a word of caution; the partner of a dive buddy of mine was in a similar dilemma and like you; she really wasn't that sure that she wanted to do it. Truth was, she actually (really) didn't want to do it and had a terrible time on the course and ended up giving it away - her main concern was the depth thing too, in fact you just quoted her virtually word for word. Diving isn't for everyone and can be daunting enough as it is.
Make sure you are doing it for the right reasons, ie that you want to do it because being 10-15m underwater, even in the tropics is no place for deciding that you actually don't want to be there.
I would suggest you contact a local club with a view to having a go at a try-dive session in the pool to see how you feel about it before making any commitment. Your fiance might just have to get used to the disappointment.
Hi guys,
thanks everyone for your tips! i will try to contact a local scuba diving school, it may be better to do some practices before going!
Richard, thanks for your concern, but even if i'm scared, scuba diving is cool, and it may be less scarier to do it with your husband. and i can try, if i can't i won't do it.
anyway, thanks for your help! :)
cheers everyone! :)

I share Richard's concern here and "scuba diving is cool, and it may be less scarier to do it with your husband" doesn't really cut the mustard. For example diving with your husband may, or may not, be a good idea, depending on the expertise of the other party. Sometimes that could (I'm not saying this is the case in your instance) be a matter of "the blind leading the blind".
Lumping two novice divers together as a "buddy pair" is never a good idea.
