View Full Version : Sunken Villages
I am interested in diving a sunken village in the UK. I remember seeing that the roof's of houses from a sunken village had become visible due to a drought on the news but do not know where this was. Has anyone dived this place or any like it & if so who do I need to contact for permission. Any other information, hazards Ect would be gratefully received.
Many Thanks
Ian

Look at Bewel Water, Suusex/Kent border, which says it has buildings, road and a bridge. I was told there was a sunken village there but have never dived it to check it out

There is also a village at the bottom of Ladybower Reservoir. (see the link at the web address above)
last time (the only time) I tried to dive it we did it during a particularly rainy spell. This was a mistake! The viz was zero.
owever - if you get all the correct permissions to dive and hit it on the end of a dry spell then I expect that it is a good dive.
When we went the church spire was buoyed - so someone must like it enough to mark it!

John,
Who did you obtain the permits to dive Ladybower from ?
"..The best thing about Ladybower / Derwent is mountain biking around it in the winter."
Yep, riding a cannondale over 'bower to Hope and back makes for a great day out.. Especially when Dave Baker owned the Cafe in Hope (alas no more tho).. Although the last time I climbed (I'm having a laff) Jacob's Ladder I stacked about 5 times ! Ah the times I've done Mam torr Happy days
..er sorry.. Mountain biking or Diving ????

I found a small bridge in Bewl Water once. Very advanced technique, swam into it! About 10 mtres down. Couldn't see a B****y thing more than half a metres away. Explored it by touch and worked out what it was. A bridge over a muddy bottom with no distinguishing features. Might have had a stream under it once. Could probably work it out if a map of the area before the flood could be found.

I walked across Ladbybower one Christmas not that many years ago - take it from me there's nothing really left to be seen (peer into a few basement/celars if you can se that far & just about make out where a road had been & that was it - I've photo's somewhere). I think the remains were demolished due to theformer residents being upset at people going there during droughts & the remaining buildings were dangerous.

The Blue Lagoon in Arlesey, Bedfordshire, has two huts, a well, several cars and a few other bits and bobs. The huts are in about 6-7m. It's not a village, but i guess it depends whats local.
See the following link for details.

Ian,
Here's a possibility for you. The web-site specifies landowners, etc. In the case I'm thinking of (Mardale near Shap in Cumbria), you will need permission from United Utilities (was NW Water). Check the website, however, as I may be out of date.

Mike
