Can anyone help?
We have a gent in our branch who's going to have a replacement knee joing operation (he's not on internet or he would ahve made enquiry himself). Initial indications are that he'll have about 90 degree bend in the knee, and his doctor has said that once he has the operation he will be able to cope with scuba equipment (weight wise). Is there anyone else out there who might have had same op, and can they proffer any experiences/guidance?
Cheers.

Hi Bill,
Not a knee replacement but I had a knee arthroscopy last July and was diving off a liveaboard in the Scillies in September. Suggest you contact UK Sports Diver Medical Committee at http://www.uksdmc.co.uk/ for a definitive answer.
Cheers???Allan
P.S. mine was down to a misspent youth on motorbikes

Personally a lot of my mobility problems are caused by a _well_ spent youth on bikes :-)

My dive buddy had a knee joint op - 2yrs ago. It took the best part of 12 weeks to get back to some sense of normality - a further 3 months before any pool work - finning was painful after 10 minutes - this extended as the limb returned to more mormal activity.
Fully recovered now - she can manage her kit providing its not over obsticales (ribs are a mare and shingly beaches) - Haven't tried a hardboat ladder yet but manages the ladders at places like Horsea - maybe a HB next year.
40-50 minutes dive max - she now prefers drift dives and wrecks.... There are physical limits - but nothing that can't be worked around..
I suspect everyones different - this is just my experience of my buddies knee replacement.
I hope this helps :-)

Hi,
Two of our divers had this op within the last couple of yrs...one M one F, aged 50/60.
I know their pain is better & they both dive ok now.....recovered ok (quickly) after op.
If you want more individual advice, mail me & I'll forward it to them.
Having had two knees surgeries already and looking at promised knee joint replacements (2) with the next surgeries, I contacted DAN.I wasn't worried about the physical strength issue, I was really worried since I do alot of deep and occasional gas diving. I figured the joint replacement would be a sure problem for circulation, (bubbles). They felt that there would be no problems following surgery! You could contact them.
