View Full Version : swimmers ear

I have read a few posts about this already, but the last time I was in Egypt I got a bad infection and only for a kind German doctor( who sorted me out with drops) my diving holiday was finished. Does anyone know the brand name of these drops in europe......they contain acetic acid/ aluminium acetate and a mid antibiotic....I think they are made in Germany.
thanks

then ask your doctor. If he's got to sign the script then he will give you advice on what is best

I cannot give you the name of the product but have generally found this available at most dive shops in warm climates. I used to get this all the time but have prevented the problem by use of the swim ear propriority product.
Applied after each dive to flush out the water, dries the ear out.
Prevention works better, than getting it first then curing it, there is no pain this way.

This answer is not peer-reviewed science but it's what I do.
Post-dive a gentle rinse with fresh water, don't point the shower head direct into thr ear canal, then a kleenex on the end of a recently washed little finger and GENTLE drying in the ear.
At the end of the diving day all the above plus a couple of drops of ear-drying agent like swim-ear,ot white vinegar or isopropol alcohol.
In the dive bag, when on holiday,I carry 2 bottles of Garamycin, one for each ear, should an infection take hold.
I had to self-treat with this stuff after a trip to Grenada and when I got back here I didn't get a furious teelling-off from the GP.
Garamycin is available over the counter here in Saudi Arabia.
Maybe you could get some ,or something similar, just in case, on prescription from your GP before you travel?
Kevyn.
