Did any body here on radio 2 today about having your neck tie to tight can cause damage to your eyes due pressure damage, most neck seals I would think are prob as tight, but what I was thinking is what is to tight, it went on to say a few mins like this can cause probs, any comments please.

Nick,
Overheard a tiny fraction of the piece you recount.
I was taught the risk in a necktie arose from the person you're dealing with - who could use it to incapacitate - so my chums and I used clip-ons!
I guess a necktie has significantly less give in its knotted woven fabric than a neck seal of thin or expanded rubber. Unless the neck seal in question is the wrong fit, it should exert a steady gentle pressure over a fairly broad area, whereas a necktie could be concentrated in a much narrower band.
I'm sure our medically qualified friends will have a definitive answer. At least, I hope they do.
Mike
PS I found the issue on the BBC site this morning, Wednesday, link below.

Well... there could be something in it - around 30 minutes after putting on my drysuit I often find that my vision deteriorates to such an extent that I can't see more than about 10m :-))

Undoubtedly, an overly tight neck seal can damage your eyes, but if you keep them closed while you're pulling it over your head and settle it round your NECK then you shouldn't have any more vision problems.......:-)

30 minutes from dry suit on to poor vision! Do you find the world starts moving sideways at the same time :-)

This Radio item seems to have followed an aricle in The British Journal of Opthalmology. The aricle states that a tight necktie can increase the intraocular pressure by upto 20% within three minutes. The major comment was that a mistaken diagnosis of Glaucoma could be made if pressure measurements were made with a necktie on. The article says that a HABITUALLY worn tight tie MIGHT predispose to Glaucoma. It seems that the evidence for connection is light. The main risk may be if we go to the Opticians whilst actually wearing a Dry suit!

Not if you are going to get prescription lenses for your mask.
