View Full Version : Easy first UK dive suggestions??
If you have to take a diver with approx 35 dives abroad in clear, warm water, for her first 2 UK dives, not too far from London, where you you go?
Any suggestion for shore dives/hard boats for two nice easy & shallow-ish dives?
Thanks

Swanage Pier? Max Depth 4m lots to see, easy entry and exit.
Kimmeridge? Never done it, but it is supposed to be a very interesting shore dive.

How about Portland? Lots of commercial hard boats.
Dive the HMS Hood and a scenic drift along the Portland coast.
Close to shore.
Less than 20 meters depth
Interesting semi intact wreck
Variety of marine life to see.

Dived Kimmeridge recently (prior to a weekend in Swanage), very shallow, we got about 4-5 metres, so water heats up quite readily, very pretty, especially the acres of snakelocks anemones (Anemonia viridis)which, as they are the UK's only symbiotic cnidarian/algal assemblage makes them as close to tropical anthozoans as you're gonna get here, good call :)

Definately the Far Mulberry, 10m max depth and one of the best dive sites in the UK.
There are photos and a log book entry at <a href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard_salmon/scuba.htm" >http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard_salmon/scuba.htm</a>
Dave Applin's excellent Dive Eclipse runs from Selsey East Beach just a couple hours from London and you can book online at
<a href="http://www.dive-eclipse.co.uk" >http://www.dive-eclipse.co.uk</a>
Dive Eclipse is a RIB but thinks it's a hardboat, complete with toilet and microwave.
Underneath Selsey Lifeboat Station makes a pleasant shore dive at slack water. You can get slack times from Ocean View's web site at

Many thanks to all for your useful suggestions. I really appreciate it.
I have booked the Far Mulberry but will keep all sites in mind for next similar outing.

The drifts along from Portland have always been a bit of a disappointment for me. Peveril Ledges (Outside Swanage) on a spring tide, now THAT'S a drift! But then I do like my drifts the Holy Sh*t side of very fast...
Chris
P.S. I know it's a first sea dive in the UK, but my regular dive buddy did his first proper drift at Peveril, and his second one 2 days before the highest spring for 200 years! Now THAT was a drift. Came up with a grin a mile wide...

Try diving off the North Pier in Sunderland, its a popular site for Wearside dive club and they can be contacted via the net.
They dive this site regular, as the average depth is 4-10 mtrs.
Good luck and have fun.
