Hi All,

Thank you for taking the time to read my ramble.

I'm returning to diving having done the usual PADI stuff in Eygpt and some diving in warm waters.

I'm looking to dive in the UK.

I've joined my local BSAC in Sussex, and looking to transfer to ocean diver / sports diver.

I've not had my own equipment before so am looking to get some second hand stuff.

I've recently bought a Scubapro BCD but need everything else.

I think i want some apek regs,
A tank

I'm looking at doing a dry suit dive in the next couple of weeks before i decide whether to buy one or not. Can't stand the thought of being cold so suspect may be going down this route.

Did I say I can't remember the last time i was this excited.

anything considered.

Unfortunately, second hand does not always work out too well. I've had my fingers burned a few times.
With items like regs, you'll want to get them serviced and that will eat deep into any saving you make by not getting them new.
You'll probably want a new computer, too. And, unless you're a very normal shape, you'll want a made-to-measure drysuit, which means buying new.

By all means, get a used cylinder - but unless it's well in test, add £50 to the price you pay for the test fees.
You can pick up some cheap weight belts on eBay and there's not a lot that can go wrong with lead.

Allyn you need to find a new lds if there charging you £50 to get a cylinder tested. My Lds is £25 for hydro and visual. Well as for only "Buying new regs" I personally would consider buying second hand as I got a set off eBay last year for £100. These had only been used in the pool once and the guy even gave me the reciept as they were a couple of months old. I saved a couple of hundred quid of new price so was well happy. eBay is a gold mine for second hand equipment if you get the right stuff at the right price. My only advice is before buying anything read every review that you can find on that product as many people will tell you how good/bad a piece of kit is.

Its probably a good idea to run some of your planned ebay purchases past some of the old hands in your branch - they may be able to help you avoid some costly mistakes!

I'm coming to the conclusion that second hand tanks are a false economy - if you have a look at the price 15l cylinders go for, and compare it to new there is surprisingly little in it (maybe £130:£175).

I would look at what sort of deals can be done on ATX40s and DS4s - DiveLife, SDS and DiversWarehouse have been known to do some stonking deals on these.

Hope that helps - and I'd definitely get a drysuit pronto, they tend to be very expensive to hire and there is nothing worse than being cold!

What you also want to ensure is that you get a DIN fitting 1st Stage as well as a DIN Tank tap. A new DIN tank tap is going to cost a bit, from memory an A Clamp to DIN conversion kit for a 1st stage is about 15 quid in your neck of the woods. Both those are extra money that you can do without spending by buying correctly in the first place.

No nothing wrong (apart from not reading the message before pressing submit).

You might get a better reaction though if you put your location and a price
