They're privileged to have a job that allows them to drink alcohol as part of it.

In 1850 the size of the tot was halved to a quarter of a pint per day (were you around then Eddie.:D )
Then on July 31, 1970 the last pipe of "Up Spirits" in the Royal Navy was heard and is referred today as "Black Tot Day". (Although all ratings received an allowance of an extra can of beer each day as compensation.)

The Royal Navy issued the last tot to 'the fleet' on 31 July 1970. Since then, this has been known in Royal Naval Slang as the 'Black Day'. [1] The remaining rum stocks were put up for auction. They were bought by Brian Cornford and shipped to Gibraltar and held in a secure bonded warehouse

When I joined my first ship in Gib in the early 70.s there was a local pub where you could buy a tot of real "pussers rum"
