Welcome to this fantastic activity, if you get hooked it will become a passion.
Why are you going to your GP? The Self Certification Medical Form (http://www.bsac.com/core/core_picker/download.asp?id=10081&filetitle=Self+Declaration+Medical+Form+%2D+Scuba) is a requirement. A visit to your GP is not a Diving Medical Referee (http://www.bsac.com/core/core_picker/download.asp?id=10085&filetitle=List+of+Medical+Referees) is only required if you can't answer "no" to all the questions.

Hello Edward
Thanks for your welcome....I done the self cert and asked my quack if i would be ok for diving after suffering from graves disease (tyroid eye disease)for many years and i had to have squint surgery in 2005, found out i need a letter from a consultant to say im ok and not just the quacks, better to be safe but still cant become a member until i get that bit of paper
Regards Steve

The point is that the ONLY doctor that can sign you off for diving is a diving referee. Not a consultant, not the head of the GMC, but a diving referee - not all of which are consultants. Edward has pointed you to a list of those referees
