Hi,
In recent years I have always tried to run some kind of curtain raising event each spring to get all the members together and do something "fun"
The last 2-3yrs we've gone down to Gosport and dived in the SETT followed by a trip around the Submarine museam then a curry in the evening :)
I'm looking to do something different this year- any suggestions?
(I've already begun investigating Aquarium dives but can't find any locally (we're located in Hertfordshire) so if your club has gone and done this somewhere I'd be interested to hear about it)
Thanks,
BEN

Hi Ben
How about the following:
1. Do a "chamber dive" to (say) 50m
2. Do the Helicopter Escape course
3. Get (pay for) Jack Ingle to come to your club and do a "kit configuration" talk
Some thoughts...

Not bad, fairly cheap too, perhaps not Very "fun" but I like it.

Oooo, whats that all about then? Sounds interesting?

You need to get a group together and negotiate a discount.

Nope, he's been to our branch to do it for us.....he does know some of our members but think he'd do it for any near-ish branch. (We're Herts too).
More suggestions:
Does the London Aquarium do tank dives? (nearer)
Visit to Sea Life centre (bit tame, that)
If you can't do chamber dive (we went to DDRC in Plymouth), I think you can do tours at Whipps Cross Hospital NHS Hyperbaric unit(N. London).
Hard hat dive
Rebreather "try-dive" session.
Get the RNLI local rep to come & do a talk or flares demo (great fun, we had one last yr)...I can give you the contact for our local chap).

As far as I recall, Andark can organise it - basically, its the training course you need to work on the rigs - do it without the certification & its cheaper

No, he came up to Yorkshire/Lincs region & did a talk one evening - very informative, great fun. Can't remember which club organised it, but held one evening in a pub (great start...) and (I seem to remember) it was ?10 per person including food

How about the RNLI flare demo like Lindsey suggested, it is really great fun and spring is a fairly good time as it's still dark in the early evening.
They also do a boat capsize course we're looking into this as it sounds really 'fun' (and informative) apparently they have a small boat that they put in the pool and teach you what to do when the boat capsizes, and then you do it!!! - even better it's all for free but they do like a donation, which you can't argue with really.
