Keep Bluefin Tuna off the menu in Stratford Upon Avon (http://www.facebook.com/editaccount.php?networks#%21/group.php?gid=123781004333193&ref=ts)

Hi,
Just a quick one, if you are on Facebook could you please look at my group and join, and inform other BSAC members and branches that a few of us are starting a small and polite campaign to encourage a newly opened local Japanese restaurant to not serve Bluefin Tune, especially as they don't even tell their customers what they are eating...
Many Thanks
Jens Hucke

I appreciate your morals on this issue - but ...

• Why would a restaurant not proudly state that it is serving Bluefin Tuna?
• Is it farmed (I know, there are issues with that also). Did you ask that question?

I don't know, I live on the other side of the world but it would seem to me that these questions would need answering before any further action.

Hi there,
Contacted them directly on three occasions.
The only feedback I got was a one-liner that stated that they do use Bluefin in some dishes, and that they regret that it does not meet my requirements.

As a consequence I do not know what replies they would give you on your 2 questions.

My guess is that for the first, it's not their job to educate the customer, which may be true, but regretable. I also think it must be difficult to advertise selling an endangered species. Maybe ignorance is truelly bliss?
As for the second, my understanding is that farmed tuna, was wild tuna until caught, and fattened up in pens for 6+ months, something that is now necessary as the wild tuna caught is on average getting smaller and younger... which is why it is up to everyone to help lower consumer demand and give stocks a chance to recover to a sustainable level.

I hope to get a good and constructive dialogue with them, but at this stage believe that there is a benefit of being part of a group as opposed to a single voice. Saddly I agree it isn't subtle...

Subject: Successful campaign to “Keep Bluefin Tuna Off the Menu in Stratford Upon Avon”

Many thanks to those who joined this Facebook group. Your efforts and support have made a difference and the Japanese restaurant in question has changed its supplies and no longer serves Bluefin Tuna. I would like to thank Fuji Restaurant in Stratford for engaging in such a constructive policy review.

What difference taste wise is blue tuna to regular tuna steak ?, dont know why they dont just use regular tuna, some people will pay for anything that 'different' though even if it tastes like crap, e.g caviar, arghh nasty.
