Things seem to be looking up a bit snorkelling-wise, at least in the public swimming pools of my home town of Newcastle upon Tyne. In addition to whatever local BSAC clubs are offering in the way of snorkelling, I've just chanced upon the following:
Just in time to prepare you for your summer holday in the Caribbean, Jesmond Pool is hosting a snorkelling class for adults is to take place at Jesmond Pool on Wednesday 28th July. Coach Phil Drape says the course will be ideal for beginners. There will only be a limitted number of places on the class, so pre-booking from Pool Reception (0191 281 2482) is essential. The cost of £15 per person will include a mask and snorkel (RRP £9.99) for you to take away at the end of the evening. The class is from 7:30 - 8:30pm.

The pool is in Newcastle's student quarter, Jesmond, north-east of the city centre. Good to see snorkelling lessons being offered in this country prior to people going on holiday rather than leaving all the instruction until arrival at the snorkelling venue.
I've also noticed this offering at Fenham Pool, towards the west of Newcastle:
The following events take place from 24 July to 8 September. Kid’s Activity Session – different sessions are held on Fridays between 11am-12 noon. Includes canoeing, snorkels and fins, mini-water polo, sub aqua and more.

Though limited in duration and audience, it's good to see snorkelling getting a higher profile in my own home town. I think, however, that there's still room for improvement, such as public pools holding one-hour snorkelling sessions weekly or monthly for adults as well as children through the winter months when North Sea snorkelling gets a little chilly.
I wonder whether UK cities other than Newcastle and Edinburgh will be offering snorkelling sessions in their public pools this summer?
