View Full Version : Diving NE England, St Abbs / Farne ??
Im toying with the idea of a club trip oop North for either St Abbs/Eyemouth or maybe to play with the seals of the Farne Islands.
I'd be happy for any recomendations of boats/digs/divesites etc.
would a longweekend be ok?
over to you guys, thanks.
Rich.

We've just come back from a week diving in the Farnes. We went with Dawson of Seahouses. The boat (Three Sisters) is a bit basic but is relatively cheap, but the skipper is excellent. For a more luxurious boat you could try Sovereign diving. I haven't actually dived with them, just seen the boats in the harbour. We got air from Sovereign Diving in Seahouses: very helpful and quick, and they do nitrox. On the day we got blown out, we packed up the vans and drove up the coast to St Abbs and did a shore dive off the harbour wall.
We have done this twice now, and enjoyed four days diving each time. I'm not sure if 3 would be enough, but then that depends on your divers I guess.
BTW the seals were a little shy this time around, whereas last year in early Jul, they were much more friendly...
Dawson has a website dawsonofseahouses.co.uk with contact details. Sovereign is at sovereigndiving.co.uk, or both advertise in the classifieds in Diver magazine

Hi Rich,
I specialise in diving with the seals there. I have a degree in Marine Biology from Southampton and have studied their underwater behaviour for some time. As a result when we dive there we get really close on many dives.
Have a look at the general forum as I've just put a note on regarding Farne Seal trips.
I've always dived with William Shiel 01665 721297.
His Father has been around the area for many years and has an MBE for services in the area. They know the dive sites better than anyone I've come across.
If you specifically want to get close to the seals then e-mail or ring me on 07932 577608 and I'll try to ensure that we book out the boat for that sole purpose.
The Farnes is better than St Abbs/ Eyemouth, although they too offer some very relaxing dives, they don't have 300kg seals to interact with!
For accommodation have a look at the link in the web site below.
Best wishes and feel free to ring for a chat if you decide on the Farnes and just want some info over the phone.
If you ring Wiliam just say that "Ben, the Seal diver, put you in touch."

Hi Rich
Here is a useful website for Dive/charter boat addresses:
<a href="http://www.subaqua.co.uk/boat/northumberland.html" >http://www.subaqua.co.uk/boat/northumberland.html</a>
However, Graeme Harrison's name is not on the site. He is a qualified diver/skipper, who runs a 22ft RIB with a cabin onboard and knows all the best sites around the Farnes, being a diver himself. (Ten minutes to the islands from Beadnell)If you are interested give me a shout and I'll pass you on to him?
Cheers Ron
