Hi All

Our club which is based Medway is looking to replace our old Evinrude 70hp 2 stroke engine on our Humber Destroyer 5.4 RIB for a new 90hp 2 or 4 stroke engine. we have not made up our minds over 2 or 4 stroke so whats your views 2 or 4 stroke. Also a list of good dealers would be helpful.

Regards,
Martin

It's got to be a four stroke these days. However I think you will be unable to fit one as a 90hp. four stroke is very likely to be too heavy for a 5.4m RIB. Sorry but I ended up changing my boat for the very same reason.

Except if its too heavy!

So it could be a 2-stroke then? What about one of the new breed of 2 strokes (like the Mercury Optimax and I think both Yamaha, Suzuki and Mariner do them too). We have a 135Hp on our club Tornado 5.8 and it is incredibly fuel efficient (just like a 4 stroke), not at all smokey (just like a 4 stroke), BUT is much lighter than the equivalent 4 stroke so it fits nicely.

We found Barnet Marine (020 8449 4142) very helpful but we were buying the full package at the time.

Hope this helps

I think the 4 stroke will be too heavy for our Humber Destroyer 5.4 RIB so it looks like we are going for a Yamaha 90hp 2 stroke but we are still shopping around. At the moment Power Products in Strood seem quite good.

We fitted a new 4 stroke to one of our boats recently and it has made it very stern heavy. Check the weight of the engine carefully against the recomended transom loads for your boat. You may be able to get a 4 stroke quite happily, just dont rush out without doing some homework, its no fun driving a rib while looking at the sky!
