The best neaps weekend of the year and good weather all week so had to
be good..and it was!
Saturday: 5 June.
Weather, lovely day, calm seas and neap tides.
Depart: Dale 9.30.
Boats: Ammanford x 3, Barry, 3Ms, AAA, Cynon Valley, Cardigan and Port
Talbot and 35 divers.
First Dive; The Hats. An isolated area of rocks about 17 miles out of
Dale. The rocks are shallow, coming up to 2.1m at chart datum and the
area is shallow over quite a large area.
The Plan: This was simple, basically to see what was there. We all
dropped into about 10m and the site is a scenic not a wreck site.
There were loads of muscles and anemonies, crustaceans, loads of
gullies and very scenic. Max depth about 25m. Mixed feelings, some
said fantastic and scenic, others 'no metal' moan,
moan...................so on to the Smalls.
Second Dive: The Smalls. 20 miles out an isolated rock with a
lighthouse. Outside slack but always seems to be slack on the north
end. Dropped in, seals immediately, after a bit of time moved off
west, and then north along a fantastic wall running down from 8m down
to 25. Covered in all sorts of life. The wall was white with dead mans
fingers. Plenty of lobsters and crabs and at the end a bit of
scattered wreckage in a guuly. A brilliant dive. I feel most who dived
enjoyed it.
Return. Straight back, a one hour drive. Incidentally our boat used
£88 of fuel on the round trip.
Evening: We had a BBQ and a few beers. Nothing excessive, honestly!
Sunday.
Weather: A bit overcast with a forecast of improving weather, and that
is what happens.
Depart: 9.30 as per plan.
Other Boats: Cwmtawe, Loughor, Cardiff University, AAA, 3Ms, Cardigan x 2
and Krakan and 42 divers.
First Dive: Barrel Rock, 16 miles out, as always brilliant! The site mixes a mix of marine life and wreckage. There are gullies covered in anemonies and
wreckage on the bottom. Most found the Ellenbeck but we found another
with a massive engine and a boiler. What a site!!
Second Dive: On to the Smalls. The sun was out and the seas quite
calm. Less surge than yesterday. Back onto the same site. This time
went a bit deeper and again brilliant.
Thanks to all, a good mission and a first visit to the Smalls for
most.
Any comments or photographs??
