Hi Everyone,

Just thought i'd say hello. I'm in the process of joining my local bsac and thought i'd stop by here to take in all the advice that I could. I've taken part in a couple of try dives at the local pool with a mate of mine and we both loved it. Going back on wednesday to sign up properly and start the process towards the OD qualification.

I'm really looking forward to it. If a little nervous. The kits not cheap either is it but I guess i'll just go slowly and buy what I can when I can.

The forums great. Looks like there's a lot to learn which is perfect for a total newbie like me.

I'll probably do more reading than posting but thought i'd say hi to everyone.

Cheers in advance for all the help.

Rob.

Rob,
Welcome to one of most exciting/relaxing sports around.

No the kit isn't cheap but don't buy anything yet until you've talked to the club. Most clubs include kit hire in the course fees. Just buy a mask, once you know how to pick one, as these are very person specific, and leave everything else until you've completed OD and have a better idea of what you want.

You will also have done a few sea dives by then and know if this sport is really for you.

if you do decide it's time to buy then take a lot of advice from the senior guys at your club on what is good/bad kit. Some will be happy to let you play with their kit in the pool. Some of the guys will talk all night so have someone primed to phone you after 30 mins.:o

If you choose the correct kit it can last for years and the total cost of ownership over time isn't that bad. Cheapest isn't always best but it depends on your cash flow.

Ron.

Welcome to diving, BSAC and the forum.

It's a whole new world out there.......... and it's for your enjoyment. :)

By the way if you add where you are from more folks may be able to help with local information and the like.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

I'm not going to go mad buying the gear just yet. I've been out today and tried on every mask and snorkel in the local dive shop before picking out one that fitted. A nice guy on this forum has sorted me out with a dive computer too so I sould have that to play with in the next few days.

Apart from that I was told that most of the other gear can be borrowed or hired until I know what it is that I need. I'm in no rush but I think the drysuit comes next and that could take a while.

:D I'm happy to listen to them at the moment. Since I don't know much about the gear i'll just learn all I can before doing any serious spending. I'm going along to the club tomorrow and then off to the pub with them to find out more afterwards.

I'll fill in some more details in my profile. Thanks for the reminder Alan. :)
