I was just carrying out a few weeks volunteer fisheries assessment work in the post-Tsunami coastal areas in Sri Lanka.
People are getting their lives back together on shore, but there is a big problem of debris below water along the beaches - concrete posts, all kinds of stuff. A few NGOs have been trying to help but it really needs divers.
I wondered if through BASC or diving clubs, there might be any groups that would consider taking their holiday this year in Sri Lanka and try and organise some beach clearance as volunteers? Local fishermen would be able to help with boats and there is air available - even bottles to rent. It may be enough to have divers attaching ropes to the debris and then the villagers could pull the stuff ashore - or maybe with a simple winch etc. attached to a palm tree.
Sri Lanka has a beautiful coastline, the food is great and the people friendly. I'm sure a dive group would have a great time and have the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile for these hard hit areas.
If you need any more info or if I can help anyone with local contacts there, email me at davidcurrie45@hotmail.com.
