Has anyone completed any conservation diving?

I have four weeks to dive and I want to do something useful with my time! While building up my skills...

Can anyone recommend a charity/association?

Hi

I've undertaken surveys with Reef Conservation International (http://www.reefci.com/) in Belize.

Before working here i was with Global Vision International (GVI).
you live in paradise, not luxury just paradise and learn monitoring skills, up your diving qualification although it will be PADI and being part the local community too, i really enjoyed it and mexico is great. they do also run other courses all over the world. Check out there website, im pretty sure they have a good reputation worldwide.

We've just started a conservation branch of our diving centre. Have a look bigblueconservation.com

Big Blue have won awards every year for environmental initiatives, we're also a BSAC school so you might be in familiar hands...

I went to Indonesia with Operation Wallacea, and friends have been to Egypt and Hondurus with them too. They also go to Cuba and SA I think. It's conservation coming from a scientific perspective. So in some places they collect data to get evidence about the diversity and damage etc within an area, then use this evidence to lobby the government to do something. In Indonesia this has worked and they now have a no-take zone and various protected areas which they are now collecting data to show the positive effects. This will then be used as evidence to get other areas protected. Its really working and they have the support of the local community etc.

ANyway, really enjoyable, great diving and worthwhile. Look them up!
