Photoshop, being pixel based, is not the world's best programme for setting type, that's quite definitely not what it was designed for.
I assume your distorted type is for a headline? There are, however, many different methods of distortion: if you simply mean setting your type in an arc, adding spacing between letters (called kerning) or extending the letters in length or width you're much better off doing it in a proper desktop publishing programme (which is not the same as word processing) the best of which is (IMHO) Adobe InDesign (http://www.adobe.com/products/indesign/family/). An alternative is QuarkXPress but most people today prefer InDesign.
The problem is that that (a) costs money, quite a lot of it, and (b) takes quite some time to learn properly. If this is a relative one off it's probably better to go to the local corner printer (better still a Graphics House if there's one handy), get it made up for you and take it home, or have it posted electronically as a .eps (Encapsulated Post Script) document.
An alternative is that Adobe do allow use of a programme for a trial period of, usually, one month but I don't know whether that applies to InDesign.

OK - specifics :) I need the type that currently reads 'nevermind' to instead say 'MERBABIES'
Any offers on whether can be done in photoshop or would need another program? It's a one-off thing - I don't normally do anything particular with type...
(Thanks Christian - if I can find out which program can do it I'll download a trial version :) )
best wishes,
Maria

It's pretty easy to "maritime" a font but, yes, Photoshop is quite definitely not the way to do it, in fact you'd have to be extremely expert to do it in Photoshop, if it can be done at all - I really wouldn't bother.
A good Graphics House or even corner shop printer (except that the latter is likely to farm it out and stick a premium on it) is quite definitely your best bet. A Graphics House would find that an absolute doddle to do - 10 minutes at worst, probably more like two. Problem is that they probably charge in 30 minute chunks but that should still be very significantly less than buying the programme, particularly for a one-off.
Now, they really should let you sit down with the person doing the "artwork", who should ask you:
• how do you want this, ie monocolour or multicolour or both. Obviously you should go for "both" but be aware that this is your logo, keep it simple,. mono or one collection of colours, a simple one, only.
• having said that, you should also ask for a bitmap file (I really shouldn't tell you this) which will allow you to change the colours at will.
• so what you want is a .eps of a monocolour (black and white) file, a bitmap file and a .eps of the coloured file that you have decided upon.
• whether you can actually use a bitmap file with whatever software you use is a moot point.
Go see some professionals, they'll fix your problem quick-as-a-wink.:D

You could use the clone stamp to paint over the words you want rid of and then paint your new words over the top in whatever font and style you want.
I am not a photoshop expert, but it doesn't look to difficult.

First attempt,
Not exactly what you want... but I'm a complete amateur.

Thank you people :)
It is for a Nirvana addict that has asked me to overlay his underwater baby photo with the exact stuff :(
I think I am getting closer though.... :) So it is a case of locating the correct font and working out whether the font is doing that double distortion thingy or whether a program is 'stretching' it in different directions to create the wave and distortion effects.
Not for a logo Christian so I don't really want to spend money on it.... just a one-off....

Hi Craig,
Am trying to do another layer in Photoshop that I can then merge with the photo I am using... I can slap a file from any other program into photoshop, so can create in something else and then move it across if necessary... :)
best wishes,
Maria

Hi Maria,
I used paint.net which is a free tool similar to photo shop, but with no where near as much functionality.
I took the original picture you gave me and used a clone stamp to remove the current album name from the picture.
Then I added another layer or top where I put the text (either from paint.net or an image copied from another application). I rotated and scaled that layer in order to make the text line up with the album cover.
Hope that helps

Hi Craig,
Was that a standard 'warp text' on paint.net or do you know if you can warp it from multiple points to get that multiple wave effect? I thought about running the text along a vector path but don't know how to duplicate it along the top so that you get that fat/thin/fat/thin/fat thing?
Thanks and best wishes,
Maria

Maria, I don't know if you're still having problems with this - I never knew the site had an off topic bit!
Have you tried to find a similar font, and just adding that to the picture? www.dafont.com has a few that are similar - try searching for these fonts on that site:
Underwater love
Beer Goggles
Somewhere in space
There are probably loads more - that was just from a quick look.
