View Full Version : Private Messages (PMs)

On a recent thread it happened yet again: one poster replied that a PM had been sent, another one then replied that it had been replied to.
Please people, why waste everyone's time on an otherwise relevant thread with such rubbish? No, not the PMs, just the advice that they had been sent and replied to.
By all means send your PMs, just don't let everyone else know about it, that's tiresome, it simply clogs up the thread.
Having said that, PMs are just that - private. Some time ago a poster referred to one of mine to that poster on site. I was not amused and only just managed to contain my response.
Er, that might have been me...
Sorry if it winds you up...

They're not 'private' and never have been on this forum, they're 'personal'.

Could that be called "semantics"?
Whatever, PMs should be between the parties involved.

I have no idea, actually, whether it was you, or not - if you're referring to the "sent a PM/replied to a PM" section of what I said. Having said that I rather doubt that you were guilty of that infringement but I don't remember.
My other rant was directed to another that got a PM from me that they referred to, rather directly, on these forums, something that I much doubt that you would do.
But that's really by the by, I'm more concerned why people would send such inane posts as "PM sent" and "PM replied to".

Christian,
99.9% of the messages you refer to are used as bagseys on for sale items,
I.e. for sale such and such,
PM sent re; such and such. (translated to Aus, "I've bought that, it's gone, nobody else bother)
It keeps the actual purchase price seperate from the discussion, and speaking as a brit schooled in Aus, it's a cultural thing....
How much you pay for something or anything to do with money is treated as taboo here, the whole PM sent and replied to is part of the dance.
For you and me (for a good while, in fact still) its a mind bend and a complete waste of time, but you can't circumvent the dance.
HTH.

Christian,
The other point to bear in mind is those people who are new to the forum life do not realise they may have a PM as they do not set the flag to inform them when one arrives. Some do some don't.
So unless they look along the welcome line to Personal Messages they are oblivious that they have indeed received one.
So spare a thought for those not so netiquette as your self and give the newbie’s a bit of leeway.

Damn right.
The public statement of a PM is a time/date stamp to make public a claim
when bidding on a list of kit. Without it, you could possible propagate
resentment if you thought your PM went in first and you lost out.
This is not anti-netticate, but an established method of ensuring a position
in the bidding order.

Barry,
As a Viennese schooled at a fair dinkum Brit Prep School (the only one) in what is now called Sri Lanka and then a Public School in the UK, I have a total abhorrence for money matters. :D
You have not once, ever, heard me refer to money other than in very general (eg how cheap is cheap?) terms. I have, never mind that I've lived in Oz since late '60, completely embraced the Brit style of things, to the extent that I'm often complimented on my grasp of the German language "for an Englishman" - "Sie sprechen ausgezeichnetes deutsch fuer einen englaender" - "you speak excellent German for an Englishman".
Even that kind of boast rather goes against the grain.

I spent some little time trying to translate that. With the best will in the world, I can't.
Care to come up with a translation?
