Survey of Skin and Scuba Divers in the December 2004 Indonesian Tsunami
<a href="http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB2247GPQ5XL9" >http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB2247GPQ5XL9</a>
This is a world-wide Internet survey of skin and scuba divers who were in or on the water in the Indonesian tsunami on 26 December 2004. There has been little or no published information regarding the effects of natural disasters on divers. Dr. David Colvard, M.D. Private Psychiatry and Drs. Thomas Skalko and Carmen Russoniello of East Carolina University in Greenville NC, USA are studying what that experience was like for divers and how it has affected their lives since then.
Some of the survey questions may be upsetting, even months after the tsunami. It will take about 10 - 15 minutes to complete. The survey will automatically skip past questions that do not apply based upon answers to earlier questions. Results will be compiled and completed as a group only. No individual identifying information will be released to anyone. The risks of participating in this survey are considered minimal.
If you were in or on the water in the tsunami or know of any skin or scuba divers who were in or on the water in the tsunami, then please go to or ask them to go directly to the survey URL to complete the survey:

Hi David

I have picked up on your post with interest, thought it is a pity you did not approach BSAC directly, so we could have had a dialogue with you and see how we could have helped and even pooled ideas. We have a vast amount of experience in incident assessment, although not so much fortunately in major disasters. We are recognised as a world leader when it comes to diver safety.

I have looked through your survey. I note there are a few potential areas where there might be some confusion over terminology ? diver grades, education etc. ? although I don?t think this a fundamental problem. Much of your research centres around the post trauma effects, although I would hope that there may be some more general information and possibly safety lessons to be learnt too. I note that you say nothing about the availability/publication of your work when the research is completed. Your findings are likely to be of interest to our members and other divers. My feeling is also that, at over 60 questions, some of which have open replies, it will take rather more than 10-15 minutes to complete.

There may be some members and others who will directly answer your posting. However, we may be able to help you more by actively drawing attention to your survey ? there are several ways of doing this, including by us posting something in our Tsunami Information Exchange page on the BSAC Travel Club website. Nevertheless, I am sure you would agree that we need a dialogue with you first. I am therefore drawing your post to the attention of several of my colleagues, including those who specialise in incident reporting and evaluation.

David Dixon
BSAC Travel Club Co-ordinator

P.S. Members may like to read the up-date in my second post too!

I understand that David contacted the BSAC Chairman before making this posting. I gather it was suggested he made a posting, although it might look as though it comes a little out of the blue. Members might like to note therefore that BSAC Officers are aware of this research and it has already been referred to incident specialists for their thoughts.

David ? you might also like to make your posting at:
