Hi Peter (and Ben)
That's the second one I've heard of. Can anything be done? In a word - no. It's simple SPAM from a throw-away German Yahoo email account advertising a web site using a Western Somalia domain and hosted on a server in the USA.
Just to give you an idea of the scale of the problem with SPAM the graphic is from the @bsac.com MessageLabs filters, yup - that's ONE MILLION A DAY directed towards BSAC accounts last Sunday. Personally I use MailWasher and a whole host of other anti-SPAM measures, without them I would personally receive in excess of 1,000 SPAM emails a day.
Your example is just one of many professional SPAM set-ups, the chances of stoping them are zero.

My website's spam input is only about 15% less than it's HTTP output. 111230 in November, 102435 in December and 36074 so far this month. About a dozen a day get through the filters and get added to the hit list. How much of the internet's bandwidth is wasted trafficking trash that is deleted on sight at the recipient end beggars belief.
This one was a nice spam. There is a site sending out thank you messages for signing up to their kiddy porn subsciption list - "your free introductory DVD pack is in the post" - "you can cancel at any time - just send full credit card details too..."
Plus inumerable banks asking me to verify my account number and password or they must suspend my internet access, plus 'meds', plus porn, free money, mortgages, the usual crop of 'Nigerians' and, suprisingly, a septic tank supplier.

I got it too, but i hover over the senders name to check out their email address before i open anything i don't recognise, so this one got deleted before opening.
Strangly enough i keep getting mails from the Halifax bank asking me to veryify my details with them and i don't even bank with them!! needless to say i've passed it on to their investigation team

Good for you, too many people just ignore this stuff while other less observant people get caught and stolen from.
Keith, I forwarded this one as it was unusual in mentioning where he'd stolen the addresses from, BSAC... I know it happens all the time but Yahoo filters out this rubbish very well, I only get one or two SPAM a week actually in my inbox so thought I'd flag it up.

Yep, I got that one too but just thought that some software had harvested my e-mail addy from a posting on the "Buy and Sell" forum
Strangly enough i keep getting mails from the Halifax bank
Yep, get these with some regularity too
Spam, don't you just love it? Not! But for every person that just bins it straight away there must be many many more who reply or act on them so the spammers will keep on going till everyone wises up (which is, of course, not going to happen)
Anyone else get spam phone calls from America in which you discover you've won a cruise or suchlike?

As posted you will never stop all Spam--it is a big money game out there in cyber space :-(
i use the internet a lot and have invested in Spamcop,it is a service that you pay for on a yearly basis(about 30 us dollars)
and it filters All my email before sending onto my email accounts, you can preset your filters, add peeps to a whitelist--that it lets through and overall its a great aid to stop all the spam getting to my pc, for your information below is the link. It may not be for everyone, but i would not be without it :-(

Have Fun--Be Safe.

I keep getting random phone calls from people trying to sell me stuff - i've given up being polite now and just go 'thanks but no, bye' and hang up. Don't you find that you can always spot them as they introduce themselves first and they're generally from some company you've never heard of!!?
I had one girl call and i just left the phone off the hook and carried on cooking dinner and went back 20 mins later and she was still talking - to herself!!
There's one scam out there that calls you up, tells you you've won a prize (generally something very nice) and asks you to press a number on the phone. This redirects you to a premium rate service which you pay for. BT etc can't do anything about it as the calls come from abroad and is therfore legal!!!

And even the spammers are getting cheated. I have mail coming in on over 300 competely fictional names on my domains that somebody has just invented and sold eg: duncan@nigelhewitt.co.uk I would expect they do this same list of prefixes on any domain that has live SMTP.
Why somebody should assume that a person who sells you 50 million addresses to spam is honest and you are getting a useful list is beyond me.

For a variation on the theme I just got this through!

Dear Sir
My name is Mr.Wang Chow Qin,a native of Banda Aceh,Indonesia.I got your
information while browsing the internet in search of a reliable person that
will assist me because of the problem my family have during the water Quake
Tsunami on December 2004.
My family were killed during the Asian Tsunami Disaster on 26 December 2004
and right now i am at Australian Military Hospital in Banda Aceh seek for
your assitance for my father,s waelth because as soon as i get well from
the hospital, i will not like to stay or live in asia any more as i don,t
have any family here,This is because after the death of my family,I inherited
all my father buisness and wealth.
I was a Gold dealer in Deira "GOLD SOUK"meaning gold market in Sri Lanka.
At present, I am suffering from a long-time cancer
of the brain and from all indications, my condition is realy deteriorating
because doctor'e report shows that i may not live beyond six months from
now.
So, I now decided to divide part of this wealth,by contributing to the well
being of the less privileged and handicapped around the world.
This mission, which no doubt is very tasking had made me to recently relocate
from my family house to Sri Lanka where I live at present so i can avoid
pressure and distraction from the shock. I selected you for this Purpose
and prayed over it.
At first, i did not know how to put up this request for asistance because
I have been recieving scam mails from AFRICA. However I feel I can trust
you and I am willing to donate the sum of $7,800,000.00
Million US Dollars to you for the development and well being of the handicapped
and less privileged around your country.I have also decided to map out $500,000.00
for your own personal expenses in the course of this work.
Please note that, this fund is currently deposited with a Finance organisation.
But I can ask my Attorney to help file an immediate application for the
transfer of the money in your name.
Futheremore, if you are willing to assit me on this request, Please kindly
reply to me on this E-Mial Address(xxxxxxxxxx) where my Lawyer
will be in controll of our transection, Secondly,do not reply me if you
have the intention of using this fund for personal use, other that what is
mearnt for.
Lastly, I want you/family home to be praying for me as regards my entire
life and my health because I have come to find out since my spiritual birth
lately that wealth acquisition with out God, one's life is vanity upon vanity.
I await your urgent reply
REMAIN BLESSED.
Mr.Wang Chow Qin.

Okay guys - if you want to ease (you can never stop) your spam input and safely get a little of your own back on the scammers, here's what you have to do.
1. Have at least 2 email accounts and layer them. I have one web account that I place in the public domain (using ebay & amazon etc, forums like this, people I don't know that kind of thing) and one POP account that only friends & colleagues have. I don't use MailWasher (though it's good) and don't get email on my 'prvate' email. The 'public' account can be easily cleaned. This is not difficult to set-up or maintain.
2. I have place my name and number with the Tele phone Preference Service: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
Can't do anything about those US calls but is very successful with UK spam call.
3. Want to read how people get their own back on scammers? http://www.419eater.com/forum/index.php is the place to go.
4. Want to close down scam websites? http://www.aa419.org/index.shtml will find them for you. All your have to do is to refresh their page and use up the scammers bandwidth. 'Everyone is an artist!'.
5. NEVER REPLY TO SPAM - that just tells them they have a live email account, you'll be inundated with the stuff...

On all the web sites I have, I now have the email address links converted to hexadecimal which the spam harvester bots can't read. Not yet anyway.
It seems to be working anyway, as I don't get much spam any more on my web displayed addresses.
And nearly all the ones that do get sent are caught in the server based spam filters.
I'm actually down to 3 or 4 spam emails a day.
Here's a link to a web site which converts the email addresses to hexadecimal for you:
