Hi there, Admin Gods,

Love the new forums and looking forward to using them. I was looking at the Calendar function and was wondering whether it would be possible to set up a Club calendar using this? Doesn't have to be restricted to club members (in fact, it might be better if it were open access).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Iain

Hi Iain and welcome.

What kind of events would you want posted? W have 3 calendars at the moment, do these cover what you want?

Hi Ian

The Calendar system on here is global to the forums, setting up an individual one for an individual club is not really practical, technically possible but a massive Admin task if every club wanted one!

Sorry about that. However - the 'Members Calendar' is open to any verified BSAC member to post to (or it should be), if you're in the members section then you can post to it. We would love it if branches would post their open/spaces events to it, then everybody sees it as a global "What's On" list of upcoming events. For an internal branch Calendar you would be better off running your own private bulleting board on your club web site, phpBB and FUDForum are free Open Source software that may do the job for you. Chat to some of the club webmasters (start a thread in the members area?), I'm sure there's somebody in the club who can point you in the right direction.

Well, I was thinking along the lines of something that could be tailored for individual clubs - i.e. their own diving/trips programme and training courses. It's something that we've tried to do on our own website in the past but with little success (because updating it turned out to be too complicated).

I was just wondering whether the calendar function on here could be adapted to allow individual clubs to have their own calendars.

I may, of course, be asking the impossible - but if you don't ask, you don't get!

Thanks,

Iain

Thanks Keith,

You answered my question whilst I was typing a reply to Adrian!

Hmm - have to have a think about this one, especially as I am not actually the club webmaster and have little knowledge on such things.

Cheers.

Probably technically possible Iain, but likely an administrative nightmare.

It would be quite a job to create a calendar for each club along with a user group to control the 'write' access to it. It might be possible to automatically create all the calendars and groups and populate the groups based on their membership information.

One thing I would like to see in the software we are using is a searchable calendar. This is not possible at the moment, but would be required if you wanted to seach all calendars for a particular SDC for instance.

What did you use for your calendar on your own site Iain?

Hi Ian,

Our club uses a web based calendar run by these guys:

http://www.calendars.net/

Take a look at our website to see how we use it - www.hkuc.org.hk

It is set up so that anyone in the club can post a new event but only those of us who know our username and password can modify or delete entries. This means that anyone member of our club can post an event, diving or social, at short notice without having to go through the webmaster - but the committee can delete and modify events as they see fit.

It works for us - and has done for the last 4 years. Drop me a PM if you have any problems setting it up.

Cheers,
Tristan

Thanks for that, guys. As I mentioned to Keith, I'm not the webmaster and know little about web design but I'll pass on the suggestions.

Cheers.
