I remember reading (a few years ago) an article in a dive mag about adapted or special dive lights.

I can't remember the exact methods described but it probably involved special bulbs or special lens filters or both.

The aim was to show up colours on marine life that would not normally be visible - similar effect as ultra violet light has on certain materials (or is it colours?).

Does anyone know/remember anything about this?

I remember finding something about this when I was looking on the Internet at HID - High Intensity Discharge Lights (Video/ Camera). I didn't really take much notice, because I was only interested in the HID lighting for U/W Photography.

I seem to remember that you need a special filter, an HID light, and of course special film in the camera (UV sensitive I think).

You get some really spooky shots, as a lot of the corals and marine life appear to be totally different under the UV filtered light

It looked expensive!

Try searching with Google or Yahoo on HID lights or HID lamps?

Sorry I can't be more help

Cheers

Dave

I have 2 x Underwater Kinetics Light Cannons and have been very impressed with them. I use them as 'video lights' for digital underwater still photography, to improve lost colours. The battery life at around the 3-hour mark is also impressive. A downside is the cost of a new HID lamp at around the 60 quid mark! Some of the HID lights are very expensive, which is a shame, because the light they produce is of superb quality.

That's if you're looking for 'Fluorescence'.
