Thanks for posting Shippers!
Following the story yesterday I followed the BBC links to this outstanding Horizon documentary on freak waves - may be of interest:

Registered in Malta, HQ in Cyprus.
The thing, though, is that these waves occurred in the Mediterranean. Every time I've been to the Med it was a pretty big wave that managed to jump up to my ankle.
Now that's scary.

Have to disagree with you again Christian :D . One of the worst storms I have ever been in was in the Gulf of Lion, Med http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Lion
Was in a v large Aircraft Carrier as well. Something to do with the proximity of the Bay of Biscay across the short expanse of land there it seems.
When were you in the Med last? Anything to do with the Roman Army was it?

After watching the documentary and hearing how the experts wouldn't believe the eye witness accounts of giant waves because it didn't fit their scientific model, it begs the question about how many other things the experts have got wrong in relation to natural phenomena.
