At least 25 people are believed to have been killed in mudslides and floods caused by storms on the Portuguese holiday island of Madeira.

Really sad. A similar storm appears to have hit the island of Tenerife recently.

Have just come back (last Wednesday).

Understandable really - the land was super saturated from all the rain last week. Still have family out there on Holiday. Nervous times..

Glad to hear you are back but sorry to hear family still out there.

Rang Travel company who assure me that no hotels have been closed, as of 1000 this morning. Tell us to go ahead as planned  .

Getting critical. Will be ringing them up again this afternoon and evening as the situation there becomes clearer. :o

Returned earlyish yesterday evening. Didn't manage to dive but visited Madeira Divepoint, Funchal to have a chat and take a few photos. They appear to be a very friendly, relaxed team who are suffering having lost their boat in the flood and the nil viz that is diving around Funchal at the moment.

More later on the reprecussions of the flood and the very sad deaths that happened as a result. Our visit was curtailed by the lack of info from Thompson before departure and obviously the necessity for the local authorities to get the place cleared up. Places were opening up for business even as we left. The clean up operation seems to have been carried out in a swift and efficient manner.

Last word to anyone going there soon - do not expect to dive in the immediate future and be aware that many in Funchal are suffering from the dreaded novo-virus - we did. :(

Finally - will pass this link to Madeira Divepoint, who may wish to keep us updated with their situation.
