View Full Version : Northern Dive show
According to my Facebook page there is an event tomorrow called the Northern Dive show - I can't find any other information about it, but apparently it is a BSAC event.
So first question is there such an event and is it happening tomorrow and lastly what is going to be happening.
Perhaps you mean the NW Regional Conference (http://www.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=21118)?
Cheers, I couldn't find anything.
BSAC’s Deputy National Diving Officer Andrea Dickens
Now that could be worth going for given the current topic :D
Nobody going then - Just Yaz and me then :D
Hopefully it was just the inaccuracy of my thread topic which may have confused you all.
Obviously hasn't been promoted very well.
Would have gone but got to work :(
Let me know if what it was like if you go?
Thanks
Darren

Given that the latest rendition of the, quite possibly ugly, explanation for the BSAC's current furore is still not with us I'm sure and certain that any BSAC officialdom there will retreat behind the curtain of not wishing to pre-empt the statement, whenever that may be made.

North East event 7th March > http://www.dive-wise.com/
I think we can say the party line was in evidence :)
Not worth the entrance fee, but a nice talk by Paul Haynes on Military rebreathers.
Shame on Northern Diver who were supposed to be sponsoring the event but apparently pulled out yesterday.

Postives
I enjoyed the presenters, and learnt a fair bit about the history of RB's which I found really interesting although I have no ambitions to dive with one.
Rod McDonald gave a good presentation on some UK wrecks with plenty of painted images, nice to see what some of the wrecks I have dived on actually look like. He was selling prints of the various wrecks which as Paul Haynes suggested would be ideal for dive briefs.
The last presentation I stopped for was by Chris Clavlings (sp) and he works at the RSPC Seal Rescue Sanctuary in Norwich, nice presentation with some awwwwww type pics. He mentioned how marine 'waste' can kill sea animals and showed a couple of pics of injured seals, I think he could have been a bit stronger with more of these sort of pics to bang that message home.
Cayman Island Diving sponsored one of the breaks and tea/coffee and biscuits were free..otherwise the venue was charging £1.50 for a very small cup and for those that dont know that in the main car park where the antique fair is held there is a lovely little cafe there and is very cheap and food is good. oh yeah Cayman Diviing were also were giving tiny tots of rum (ideal in the snow)
Negatives
A distinct lack of trade stands whereas last year there was plenty.
How many people in the NW region had heard this was on? Very poor marketing or advertising.
No signage once in Park Hall which suite to go to and I located it purely by luck but I saw at least 20 people walking pass. Why there was no InDeep Posters outside the venue or even arrows pointing to the place is very poor.

Left you a message where ? on here ? or elsewhere
After the RSPCA presentation there were interesting presentations from Prof Trevor Norton (hilarious), about some of the allegedly intellegent people who have abused themselves to advance the sciences behind diving, a very interesting presentation on the wrecks of the Isle of Man and ended with a presentation on the Marine Conservation Zones, possibly one presentation too many!
Really badly promoted, not enough exhibitors and too many 30-min breaks (this would have been a good idea with more trade stands though). Needs more exhibitors to attract divers, but probably needs more divers to attract trade stands. What a dilemma!

Last year there was many many stalls including some of the big names were there ie Apeks, Scubapro, Dive Life, RB company and Hollis kit was launched there (was very good priced as well), dive centre from Hull was there, the list goes on I am sure others will add to it.
This year's event clashed with a a very large diving Trade show which was held today hence so few exhibitors I suspect. Is this poor planning? The lack of advertising, is this poor organisation? And yes before I am jumped on from a great height, I know every single person on BSAC is a volunteer and they have their family and jobs as well as this hobby.
Last year I missed the presentations as I couldnt find which suite they were in and there was no signage to direct people, but had a good wander around the exhibitor stands in my search for the presentation area I found the nice cheap cafe and antiques fair and spent a few bob in there :)
I enjoyed those 30 minute breaks as it was ideal time to network and try and talk about hog looping to anyone with a BSAC t shirt on ;)

In fairness to the region, the conference was planned first but SITA in their wisdom planned their show for the day after (today) therefore the important people pulled out as their trade show is more important.
Although you can't fault Bolton Area Divers (never heard of them) for trying desperately to sell their stuff, including that god awful Bladefish :D
Why on earth they had to force so much advertising crap on us is beyond me though.
 just googled them they are a PADI shop what the heck were they doing there :(

To pay for a bit of space and help keep the costs down for the punters, the usual reason. They probably hoped to sell to divers too.

Dive-Wise
Date : 7 March 2010
13th DURHAM Conference
Once again, Divewise comes around to herald the beginning of a new years diving season.
Having had 12 successful conferences, the thirteenth is planned to be the luckiest one yet. Not one but two drysuits will be available as prizes on the day. The first, donated by Otter, as they have for the last 8 years, will be an entrance ticket draw. All completed, paid for entrance tickets will be entered in a draw for the drysuit. The second drysuit, donated for the first time by Puffin Dive Centre Oban, will be the star prize in the raffle.
Although waiting for sponsors to confirm their donations, past prizes have included Buddy Commando stab Jackets, EPIRB's, both Suunto and Scubapro have donated computers, regulators from Seac Sub, Apeks and Scubapro, Weezle undersuits , Fourth Element base layers and since the first conference Seven Tenths have always provided raffle prizes. With these and more prizes hoped for, the thirteenth conference should be lucky for many of the divers attending.
A further piece of luck this year is an instructor incentive. If you are an instructor, bring 6 students and your ticket is free! Information on this offer is available by ringing 01207 237022.
Confirmed speakers this year are led by Jack Ingle , always entertaining and informative, Greenforce on conservation projects they are involved with and Ben Burville, most recently seen on the BBC programmes Autumm watch and the One Show. Ben has fabulous footage taken of the wildlife on our coast, some of it seen for the first time at Divewise. We also have presentations from the cox of the Filey Lifeboat and Cameras Underwater who are sponsoring the photographic competition.
For those of you with Christmas money to spend, there will be trade stands! Cormeton will be there as usual selling lots and lots of dive kit, North East Diving Academy (NEDA) will also be there, selling technical bits and pieces, including rebreather accessories, as well as offering technical courses. There will be the usual Weezle stand offering the tried and tested undersuits alongside some of their new products. T-shirts are represented by DiveNinja, and as in past years the RNLI will be present.
The conference is again held at the Scarborough lecture theatres at Durham University , starting at 10am , planned to be finished by 5. Doors open at 9am
Tickets are available on line at www.dive-wise.com or by phone 01207 237022
