Five Britons are among 12 divers who have gone missing during a dive in Egypt, police say.
The tourists, including five Portuguese and two Belgians, went missing during a dive near the island of Quseir on the Red Sea.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 12 went missing Saturday morning.
One of the Britons is a diving instructor with the group.
The police source told The Associated Press they "went down and never surfaced".
Helicopters, naval ships and rescue divers are searching the waters for the divers, he added.
Mahmoud Elmarzoki, from a diving organisation, told Sky there had been "strong currents" in the area.
But he said such an incident had "never happened before".
The 12 were among a 22-person group that was taken by boat from al Quseir to an area near a small island called al Akhawain.
one only hopes all turns out well and our thoughts go out to those involved.
