View Full Version : newbie
I am thinking about starting diving, as a friend of mine does it at a local branch.
I would like to start diving very much but I am a weak swimmer and saw on the ocean diver qualification it lists a swimming assesment. I can swim ok but I have always worn goggles and water really irritates my eyes
I just wondered if this would hold me back or should I just get on with it.
Any replys would be great.
I really badly want to do this

Many of us are poor swimmers - me included. The swimming assesment is 200m, no time limit. I can see no reason why you should not be able to work up to it if you feel you can't do it right at the beginning.
If you really want to do this, the swimming test will just be another of the challenges that await. Possibly the worst if you really are a poor swimmer.
Go for it.

I can do 200m easy. Its just if there was a time limit that I would struggle I should imagine. I am going to book my self a try dive I think lol
Thanks so much for you reply.

Welcome to the BSAC Daniel. Adrian is right, there's no time limit, any style (or mix of) you like - the only thing we're interested in is that you can cope in water and are not frightened of it. If you want to see what you're letting yourself in for then have a look at the link I've provided below, that explains our Ocean Diver course in more detail, have a look at the lesson summary.
You will get pool water in your eyes (horrible stuff, none of us like it), part of the training is to teach you to cope with such things so that they no longer worry you. Book yourself that Try Dive, anything at all that you want to know then ASK! It will be a qualified instructor who takes you on a try dive, they will be delighted to answer any questions that you have.
Have fun, let us know how you get on!
