One for HQ and the Forum Admins really.
What is the current membership numbers, as of say DEC 2009 for ease?
What is the current Forum membership count of BSAC members, NOT other agencies? Though a comparison of the numbers of BSAC and NON BSAC would be interesting.
What percentage of the BSAC membership of the forum are considered to be 'active' forum members? [1]
The aim of the thread is to attempt a straw count of the number of BSAC members this forum actually accounts for, for purposes of threads and membership views. As i agree that most of the actual members are likely to the the more IT savy (professional in the area or 'young 'em's') or people interested in more knowledge etc...or sado's that dont dive :p
John
[1] im not a maths science student etc, so dont know the ins and outs of this sort of study, but place what ever defining features you wish for 'active' members and any other area of need, adapt as needed. I dont know, maybe a certain post count or daily averge or the likes.
There are actually very few divers who are regular forum members, those on forums will probably be on more than one.
Just looking at the ones I read - total numbers online including guests (online at this moment in time)
BSAC - 108 people online
YD - 240
DIRx - 256
I rarely see more than about 30 members on here, we know Christian isn't a member but I have no idea what the percentage are BSAC members.
So if BSAC has 30,000 members I bet less than 1% are on here and about 10% of those will be active or vocal which ever you prefer ;)
Looking at the membership only 147 people out of 15000 have posted more than 100 times. (front page says 29000 members)
12485 have posted once or less.
Not sure where the discrepancy between the 15000 on the members list and the 29000 on the front page is.

I can not get excited by raw forum statistics. Forums are like clubs. For the majority a transitory place where a minority of other people do the work. We know a lot more people read than post. We know some of the readers are software bots and some of the posters are spammers.

Well, i was supposed to be, but going back to uni:) :o ...so im revising PRM instead :D
Right then, whats the current BSAC membership and whats the current number of BSAC forum members?
john
As I posted according to BSAC incident report there are about 30,000 members.
According to the forum members list there are 15000 registered members but the front page says 29000, frankly I would be very surprised if even the lower lower was accurate.
Maybe some of these imaginary members are the same ones who took part in the hogloop trials :)

I suspect that the front page number is a count of all the people who have registered as subscribers since the neolithic period. ;)
As someone said, I'm not a member and I very carefully make that point whenever there is a controversial issue involving the membership in which I might also involve myself, such as the present one.

And the purpose of all this is??
I expect you are asking this for all the right reasons :) but I have the feeling the thread will turn into another flame exercise - with bandwagons being jumped on :( . Hope not.
These forums do not, currently, reflect the strength of the BSAC - the individual Clubs themselves. All working individually as part of the whole. Hard to see how else it could work though. Getting the Clubs to contribute more to the open forums, either as Clubs or as individuals, would be an improvement IMHO.
Anyway thats my pennyworth.
Not looked into it in any detail, but I think you are confusing Forum Membership with BSAC Membership. Remember an individual has to become a Forum Member before they can post messages. That's what the member stats is giving you.
The sub-set of those forum Members who are also BSAC members is another thing. I would use data from Integra (the BSAC database) for that, but then I don't have access, nor want it.

Edward

Who's confused?
How or why would people use this to start a flame war? What point would that make...
Im just interested in the numbers of members which actually use the forum (which would be difficult to chart as they can just watch) and those that are a forum member as well.

How about a poll?
Member yes or no
Maybe length of membership / qualification.
It will have no accuracy but the response may give you an indication of furum use vs. membership
For the record I did not renew my membership last October after 36 yrs as a member.

John

John
That's a question for HQ
Can i ask why you didnt renew?
John
It is something I have been considering for a few years, but I kept renewing aotomatically
I can no longer see any benefit of being a member, it will not change my diving.

This search for numbers is, IMO, an attempt to validate the opinions expressed here as being representative of the wider BSAC, or perhaps the opposite.
I don't think the FORUM does/should claim to be representative, or speak for, BSAC. We're just a bunch of individuals. IMO a small and unrepresentative subset of BSAC. Knowledgeable but unrepresentative.
I think the age distribution of the forum members, compared to the wider BSAC, would also be a usefull thing to know. Speaking as probably one of the older members I think your opinions change with age, especially if you've had kids, I know mine did. I'd expect the opinions of younger members or those without kids to be diffferent from mine. Not that that's a bad thing.
However if these statistics are hard to gather then it's probably not worth the effort provided we don't get too hung up on the opinions of others in the forum. I come away from some threads thinking "what a bunch of t**ts":D . I'm less concerned about being out of step with this group than with the wider BSAC. Not that being out of step with BSAC bothers me much either.
Oh S**T, I'm turning into a grumpy old man.

Write it in Word format and send it to me in one email with phots in another email. Then I will edit it and publish it. ;)
By the way, I didn't go to Uni till after I left the RN when I was in me 50's. If I can do it, shouldn't be a prob for you as long as you learn to write with correct English grammar and spelling for your dissertation :p
Good luck.
