Hi all
I'm willing to give up some of my time to helping anyone who needs training up to and including AI
I'm based in Chorley, Lancs and don't mind carrying out the training in Eccy, Cape, lake district or anglesey

Whats the problem with the Spidey avatar?
See http://new.bsacforum.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?p=39#poststop
He wants 39KB for it, it has over 100 animation frames in it. At present we have 12 users with custom avatars taking up 61.7KB of database. Sorry Steve/Nick - but I get complaints from dial-up users when things are too slow, for the average forum page that one avatar would take up over half the bandwidth. I personally feel that's a bit excessive, I have to draw a line somewhere :(
Cheers

Hi Nick
The max Avatar size is only 19kb and my spidey one is 40kb
I've tried to compress it, but it won't dance
Hopefully Keith will relent and up the size to 41kb, he could always drop it down if the site becomes too busy or unmanageable with the bandwidth.....hint hint

When I posted my last thread it didn't seem to appear.
Why doesn't it show a page 2, Keith, I've just noticed at the bottom of the post tree, posts below this level. That's a bit hard to notice and pages would be much better then you can flick through them
Steve
PS I've robbed Diving NickNaks avatar, but I feel a bit of a cheat, would much rather have my own.
Tell you what Keith, lets have a poll of who's on broadband, or dial-up etc, then we can see who's too tight to pay for a proper connection.

There are international members checking the forum which do not have a choice except dial up.

Alwassia,
Within the User Cp menu/Edit Options/Thread Display Options you can untick some boxes regarding showing Avatars (the pictures next to peoples names), Signatures (pieces of text under posts that some people like) and Images. This should speed up dial up download of pages.

:p
I wish!
It's not that simple for everyone. A trade off against living with cows and sheep looking through your windows in the morning and the loudest thing around being the cockerel down the road, or car/house alarms and police sirens in the distance, not to mention WW2 with fireworks for 3 months every year.
I wish BT would allow broadband out here, but give me the peace and quiet and a crappy dial up service any day.
;)
I guess I'll have to make do with a slow connection. But I'd glady pay the extra for anything better if it was on offer.
:)
Gotta love these book smileys...

Everyone paid for them, part of the IT teams responsibility is to ensure as many people as possibe have access to them.
maybe the solution is to have signatures and avatars off on start up, ie people have to manually request them
on another forum i am on people have animated avatars and bit graphic signatures!
in the end I ended up turning them both off to avoid too much rubbish on my screen whilst at work ;)
Rick, I am open to the suggestion but it probably isn't a solution.
If we default to low bandwidth it is likely that the mods will get a string of "why can't I see my avatar etc ?" messages.
It's probably easier on the mods to default for the majority and advise the bandwidth challenged on request.
Heads you win, tails you lose.
fair enough
same the other way round - if they complain on dial up we can always tell them how to switch them both off and include it in the Forums FAQ sticky

Great course! I did it in Blackpool last year and was probably one of the best courses I've ever done. The calibre of Instructor is so high as even the students are all AI's. I could not believe how much I learned from this....and of course socially....what can I say, pack plenty of water and paracetamol! ;)
Enjoy! See you all on an IFC sometime...
Cheers!
