Scylla Placement Day

On Saturday 27th March 2004, the ex-Royal Navy frigate will begin her new life on the seabed on Whitsand Bay.

It is anticipated that a great number of people will be interested to watch the placement of Scylla in south east Cornwall. It is expected that the event will draw crowds from the local area and all over the Britain, as it is the first reef of its kind in the UK

Weather

The event is weather dependent and needs a 4-6 hour period of stable weather conditions in order to carry out the final preparations required.

At this stage (25 March) the weekends? weather conditions seem very suitable, a notice will be posted on www.scylla-reef.co.uk should there be any changes that would result in the event being cancelled.

Saturday 27 March - Proposed Schedule of events

All timings are approximate and subject to change on the day. It may be worth taking a small battery operated radio with you in order to hear the latest information:

0600 Scylla prepares to leave the basin at Devonport Royal Dockyard

0730 She departs DML and is towed to place ? there is a 200m exclusion zone around Scylla as she is towed.

1200 Once in position in the carefully chosen site, final preparations take place. There will be a 1km exclusion zone for both air and sea.

1500- As soon as the work is complete, flares will mark the start of the placement. A 1800 series of controlled explosives will be detonated creating a dramatic display of
pyrotechnics as she is sunk to the seabed

3-4 minutes later, Scylla will be fully submerged and ready to begin her new life as a diving reef, the first of its kind in the UK.

Where to Watch?

Anywhere in the Whitsand Bay area. Scylla will be approximately 1 mile off shore; so will be seen very easily from the coast. There will be a 1km exclusion zone around Scylla; visibility should be very good from the sea too.

Travel - By Bus or Car

The roads around Whitsand Bay are quite narrow and in some places they are only suitable for single lane traffic. With this in mind the Police will be managing the traffic flow. Please park in these and other dedicated areas. Parking on the road (particularly Military Road) will result in your vehicle being towed away and a ?150 fee for release. Rame Head car park will be closed, as it is required for on the day operations.

First Western National runs regular buses to Whitsand Bay please telephone 01752 402060 for the latest timetable. The journey from Plymouth takes approximately one hour.

I'm curious to know whether anyone's actually dropped onto the wreck yet?
