OK, my DO asked this in a lecture I gave the other day. Why is it that we are branch 9172, when there are considerably less than 9000 branches worldwide. My best guess was that the 9 had something to do with the region, or something like, but does anyone have the real answer?

It's just I told him I'd find out and get back to him...

You're close, the '9' prefix was used for some time to designate youth branches, as you're a uni branch you are designated as a youth branch. The system isn't perfect because branches change status to and from youth.

With the exception of youth branches the branch numbers are allocated sequentially and we never reallocate numbers, due to branches closing the branch numbers issued will always be in excess of the active branches within the BSAC at that time.

Just out of interest, do you know when your branch was started? It's just that we're 9174 (Warwick), but I have no idea how long my branch has been around.

If you've got a 9xxx number, it may well not be the most helpful guide to Branch age. eg, my Branch (Cambridge Uni) formed around 1950 and later became Branch 52 of the BSAC. When I joined CUUEG (at the time, a Special Branch) we had been renumbered 9200, but with the introduction of a student membership category reverted to 52 a couple of years ago.
