View Full Version : sterilising equipment
what are peoples thoughts on using a diluted solution of milton for sterilising bcd's and regs??? I recently put my bcd away slightly damp and when i looked again there were a few mould spores on it. I washed it off with warm water and is ok but just wondered at what may be inside!!!! Also as i suffer a lot from bad mouth ulcers could be regs be washed in this too? I have contacted apeks but as yet they have not come back to me so thought I would get others views!

Milton is bad news for metal parts. Try and scrounge a squirt of Buddyclean from somewhere. Rebreather users have to have stuff to do just what you want.

Sterilising equipemnt is an excellent idea for a couple of reasons mainly health and safety.
I use Sterident tablents (used for dentures, i'm told) as they are safe for human use. I regularly sterilise both my BC and the inside of my drysuit - try it, it really makes a difference to comfort.
I predissolve 3-4 tablets in warm water, pour it into the BC or drysuit (block off the wrist holes) and fill with cold water from a hose pipe. Leave for about 1 hour then empty the water and repeat a couple of times with clean water to rinse out all of the sterilising solution.
The same can be done for a regulator. Fill a bowl with water an the sterident and leave the reg to soak for an hour or wto. Provided that you thoroughly rinse with fresh water afterwards there isn't anything left to damage the rubber seals/valves.
Cleaning out the bugs and slime will extend the life of your equipment and will be far safer when you use it.
Cheers, Steve
