View Full Version : Masks for prescription lenses
Hi can anyone help?
I'm looking for:
a) a mask with wide field of view, like the 'multi window' type, e.g. scubapro 'CystalVu'
b) purge valve,
c) one that I can fit corrective/presciption lenses to.
Does anyone know any good contacts to meet a+b+c above at all?

Not sure if you'll find anything - as far as i'm aware there are only a few masks with purge valves (they are generally unpopular, considered pointless by many, so not many manufacturers bother), and i haven't noticed any valves in any of the good wide-view masks.
However, you can get stick in lenses if you can find a wide view mask with purge, but i suspect if you want proper, fitted lenses you'd need to lose the purge I suspect. Do you really want / need a purge valve? For multi-window masks, i'd suggest you just replaced the main lenses, the side ones are marginal anyway in being able to see things clearly, probaly cost much more than its worth.
Just a few things to consider anyway - i'm not an expert

I use a Tusa Liberator mask (and very old Sherwood mask) both with different prescription lens for each eye. These are a two-lens design mask unlike the CrystalVu which has a large single front lens (+ side windows). Each lens cost me about ?20 on top of the cost of the mask - though its possible to get cheaper somewhere, and is pretty easy to replace the original glass lenses.
Assuming that both your eyes needs the same correction factor, then scubapro might make make a tempered lens for your mask. It is more likely (if you'd prefer to stick with scubapro) that their "Freedom" mask might be a more likely candidate.
Here's a link to some of their stuff: http://www.scubapro.co.uk/pdfs/Page70-73.pdf
Regarding the purge valve, I generally live with a bit of water when I don't quite clear my mask completely..
I have a cheaper mask on the rare occasion Im wearing soft disposible contact lenses, but you could loose these whilst doing mask clearing drills - and mentioned in some schools of thought that contact lenses and diving may be bad for your eyes - probably foreign bodies (and grit, etc) sticking to the contact lens which may lead to possible risk of infection.
Im not advocating any particular brand, just prefer to be able to see a little more than when not wearing my mask. You never know, someone might make correcting lenses for your mask.
good luck in your search.
Andy

I recently bought a new mask from Specsavers of all places. new style full mask, with internal removable prescription lenses, so my family can use the mask and i just put in my lenses when i use it. Mask was about ?40, lenses ?35, so if my prescription changes, i just need new lenses not a new mask. Company called "Tigullio Dive" makes the mask. Available from any Specsavers.

All to date thanks
"Tigullio Dive" are behind 'AST' plus some others I believe?
Do teh lenses fit in a kind of frame that you insert inthe mask? If so I think this may be 'optisub' but it's difficult to know if such a 'frame' would fit in a chosen mask.
On lenses I 've found a company,
Axis Optical

Who can bond lenses to an existing mask, could be useful!

Hi,
The lenses themselves look like a pair of transparent spectacles without arms. These have a a little piece of plastic on either side of the front rims shaped like a U ( bridge type of thing) so that the lenses just rest against the front of the mask, apart from that it just looks like an ordinary mask.
