View Full Version : BSAC Assistant Instructors
Hi gang
Hope someone can help me here. I am a ScotSAC diver and our Instructor course has changed...Long story, so I won't go into detail. I believe that BSAC have Assistant Instructor qualifications! Is this true and what are the details, are they allowed in the open water with new trainees? Please let me know, as I have an proposal to put forward at our AGM in March.
Furthermore, It is not my intention to hi-jack this forums' members, but if there are any ScotSAC divers on this forum, could you look in to the Scottish Divers forum, as there are a few proposals some members want to air. Your views (anyone's) would be welcome.
Thanx in advance
Billy

Hi
The BSAC Assistant Instructor allows you to teach in the pool and classroom with indirect supervision (basically someone around who you could ask for help if you needed it), and for Sports Diver AI's they need direct supervision to teach open water (ie qualified instructor in the water watching them), if they are a Dive Leader AI then again indirect supervision (eg surface cover instructor) is enough. All you need to do is the IFC, a two-day course that costs (I think) ?70, and you need to be minimum BSAC Sports Diver to do it.

You can also be an Assistant Open Water Instructor if you are a Dive Leader and have completed the IFC and the Open Water Instructor's Course (OWIC).

What exactly can an Assistant OWI do that a DL Assistant Instructor can't? I've never really looked at Assistant OWI as a grade, haven't known any and am not up to that stage myself yet. I assume they can't sign things off themself, since that would make them a Practical Instructor, and as a Dive Leader you can take in students without direct supervision anyway so can't be that. Is it just a nicer title with no actual change in what you can do?

Sit the PIE and progress to OWI.

Well, yeah... not quite the answer I was looking for, but then I suppose that is the only difference.
