I am a new BSAC Member coming over from Padi. I have completed the DAN Europe Oxygen Provider Course. I now found out that the DAN US & Europe Oxygen Provide Courses are, in difference to the DAN South East Asia Course, not acceptable to BSAC.
Please does anyone how what the difference is?
Will BSAC consider the DAN "Advanced Oxygen Provider" as acceptable?
Thanks for your replies.

>I now found out that the DAN US & Europe Oxygen Provide Courses are not acceptable to BSAC.
I'll be interested to see the official answer to this. The 2 options I heard during a recent debate were:
a) O2 cylinders (in different parts of the world) are different colours & could lead to someone using the wrong gas.
b) BSAC don't receive any money (ie course/training fees) if alternate certs are recognised.
b) BSAC don't receive any money (ie course/training fees) if alternate certs are recognised.
As O2 is no longer an SDC this is irrelevant

b) can't be true as some other quals are accepted.

Pete this course can still be run and will contune to be if required. O2 training has also been moved to core training.
The only money BSAC recives for alt certs is an admin fee to cover the cost of prinying and postage. If you contact HQ they will inform you why the DAN course is not recognised

I know - I was just pointing out (badly) that it can not be a fund raising exercise because its now part of core training

BSAC recognises and accepts as alternative training courses where the complete syllabus of the BSAC course is covered. In the case of DAN USA and Europe Oxygen Provider course is not accepted as an alternative to the BSAC O2 Administration Award because it does not meet the same content as the BSAC course. The DAN SE Asia Pacific Course on the other hand exactly matches the BSAC Syllabus. It may be that a revised course or one with a different content such as the Advanced Course mentioned, would meet the requirements. All that would be required is the submission of a detailed syllabus to the SDC Chief Examiner, via HQ.
The BSAC have no intention of discontinuing O2 Admin Award as an SDC. Although the same content is now incorporated in core diver training, many members will still want the choice of attending an SDC. As a consequence as long as there is a continued demand for the O2 SDC then it will remain available as a stand alone course.

As a matter of interest only, what elements are missing?

I done the Padi 02 First Aid course and when i joined the SAA i had mine crossed over so why dont you join the SAA at the end of the day a 02 cert is a 02 cert.

Thanks for that (& to the answers submitted by others).
Heres a question for everyone: What are the implications if say a DAN 02 certificate holder takes part in the rescue of a BSAC diver? Is there an insurance clause that each party need be aware of in case it goes pear shaped?
(Same applies for other skills-non BSAC boat handlers etc)
Well, I've done both courses, and they are almost identical. The BSAC course took longer to get the same message across, and taught the same things. THe PADI course is exactly the same as the DAN course. You can do a DAN course, and if the instructor is a PADI O2 instructor, get both signed off (for a fee obviously)
ANyway, I don't know why it's not recognised, and BSAC didn't even respond when i asked. Thanks for that BSAC, and hence the confusion continues. I'm sure a phone call could sort it, but now I've ended up doing an O2 course as a refresher in my branch. ?12 is bearable for the course, but it should have been a refresher course, not me having to pay for another cert I don't need.

Dear Mark,
Thank you for your reply but you response does not answer my and many others questions.
Please consider that I live in Saudi Arabia where it is difficult to attend BSAC trainng courses due to the lack of instructors. As an alternative we here have to resort to other training agnacies which may or may not be acceptable. To avoid unnecessary cost and time wastage kindly advise clearly what courses are acceptabel to BSAC.
1. DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
2. DAN Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries
3. DAN Basic Life Support for Dive Professionals (BLSPRO),
4. PADI O2 ProviderDAN Remote Emergency Medical Oxygen (REMO2)
5. PADI Emergency First Response Programs - Primary Care (CPR)
6. Padi Emergency First Response Programs - Secondary Care
(first aid)
I would think that BSAC has close communication links with all other training organisations and is very much aware of their training standards.
Apreciating your understanding.
Regards
Khaled
