Dear diver

Lyme Bay project: Assessing the socio-economic impacts of the closure

Between December 2008 and April 2009, we invited you to take part in the above research project and to complete a questionnaire. We are very grateful for your response and participation in this research. We have now analysed the data you provided and produced an initial report for DEFRA into the costs that occurred between July and December 2008 when the various sectors associated with the closed area were undergoing transition. The report is available at:

http://randd.defra.gov.uk/Document.aspx?Document=MB0101_8053_IR.pdf

Your response to the questionnaire has been extremely valuable and has given us detailed information on the fishing and recreation activities in Lyme Bay in 2008. The next stage of the research project (beginning December 2009) is to assess the changes that have occurred in 2009. This time our report will focus on both the costs and benefits of the closure on the various stakeholders.

Once again we would like to thank you for your participation to-date and we sincerely hope that you will take part in the next round of surveys later this year.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the project team

Yours sincerely,

Have just skimmed the report and there is no reference to any breaches of the no take policy. As a diver there is clear evidence that scallop dredging is continuing to happen in the zone.

Hearsay indicates that a small number of vessels are now fishing in the early hours of the morning when patrol vessels are not active
