Somebody at our branch has been diving in Farne Islands on Bank Holiday, and had been told of a fatality on the Somalia. My source points to an older diver, and I wondered whether there was any truth to the report. Anyone shed any light?

Anyone shed any light?

There is often news about incidents coordinated by the coastguard on the MCA website (see link).

<a href="https://mcanet.mcga.gov.uk/public/news/monthly.asp?month=8&year=2003" >https://mcanet.mcga.gov.uk/public/news/monthly.asp?month=8&year=2003</a>

No news is good news? Hope that, as you say this is incorrect.

Bill,

I've no knowledge of any incident (we left 2pm Monday). However we dived the Somali on Saturday, also Chris Ch and Alacrity on Sunday all of them in perfect conditions.

On Monday morning we passed the Somali around 10am, choosing not to dive from a hard boat in the conditions then prevailing, which appeared to be worsening.

Our rationale was that should anything go wrong, then we would find it very difficult to stabilise and recover the situation, an assessment our skipper quickly agreed.

Let us hope you are misinformed.

Mike

I also hope that the information is incorrect. We are off to Farnes this weekend, but my source was also diving last weekend, and they were told by the skipper of their boat - in case they decided that they didn't want to dive. I'm wondering whether this was a bit of the Northumbrian equivalent to a tall tale!
