Hi guys,
I'm arranging a trip to snorkel with basking sharks on the 4th of July. Cost is £55. The trip needs 12 people to go ahead and we're 3 short.
The trip is open to all who have a diving qualification, your own diving kit and insurance subject to DO approval. If you're interested please email me the following and I'll let you know once my club's DO has approved you...
Name
Mobile number
Diving Qualification
Number of UK dives
Date of last dive
Where will you be coming from?
Do you have a car?
We're chartering PK divers' Celtic Cat (£55 each). If the sharks are in the area then we can go find them and snorkel if the skipper thinks it's safe. If there's no sign of the sharks then we'll divert and go diving. Probably Raglan Reef (my favourite!) and the Volnay.
We'll be camping Saturday night and doing some more shore diving on PK reef on the Sunday. You're welcome to join us for that too.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Hannah x
P.S. In case you're thinking it's a bit late for basking sharks, the peak basking shark season is usually end of May, beginning of June but they're late arriving this year as the water isn't yet up to 13 degrees so we're still in with a chance!
Why do you need a diving qualification to be on the trip, BSAC has a large snorkeling community who don't dive.
OK just read the read about going diving, although not sure your DO knows me so how can they approve me.

Chuckle.
And (if I were in the UK which I'm not) I don't have a mobile, so that rules me out anyway.

and does the fact I have a car make a difference

Hi guys,
To answer your questions...
You need a diving qualification for plan B, which is going diving off the boat if the sharks aren't around. I think PK Divers wanted everyone who may go in the water with the sharks to be divers, probably for insurance.
It doesn't matter if you don't have a car. It's just so we know how we're going to get everyone there. If you don't have a car then I assume you need a lift. Hence the "Where are you coming from" question.
Mobile number makes it easier to contact you if I need to and you don't check emails regularly.
Yes our DO doesn't know you, but she has to be confident the trip is safe. That's why we want to know your qualification, number of dives etc.
Anyone interested?

I question your comment in your last paragraph, having a qualification does not necessarily mean you are a safe diver so please tell me how your DO is going to ascertain the divers abilities.

Hey, Yazz, go easy!! :D
I think if a club is running a trip and people unknown are joining the group, it is only fair and safe to get some details from them. Even if it is only qualifications and number of dives, it's better than nothing. Knowing peoples' skills (especially in rescue) can be crucial sometimes.
I think you know why this might be so if you recall my club's recent trip to Mull.

I am sorry if I sounded hard there but it really does pee me off that there is an assumption that a qualification can be used to judge abilities, as we know it cant always be. As people react differently in different events.
I understand that the Mull trip people quickly took on their various roles and worked well together.
I have a question but will start a new thread.

:D
If I am managing a trip I print out a list of our club members with emergency contact numbers, qualifications and SDCs etc. A quick read of this before setting off just reminds me of peoples' skills and I feel a bit more prepared. That's not to say though that qualifications mean everything, but it's nice to know who has radio/PRM/First Aid etc etc.

Hi Hannah,
Firstly can I just say congratulations on making an effort to organise a trip. I do 40+ expeditions a year and I know how difficult the logistics and organisation can be. You get no thanks and generally end up out of pocket.
If more people made the effort to organise and come on trips instead of criticising then people may get more experience and as such become safer divers and better dive managers / trip organisers.
Planning a trip with unknown divers is difficult. A snorkling trip has just as many (if not more) possibilities for problems.
Qualifications are not guarantees. Experience is often a better guide but remember people dont always tell the truth and often think that diving in the red sea is the same as diving / snorkling in UK waters. I dont wish to stereotype but you will find when you talk to someone you get a good handle on what they are capable of. Dont always believe the stories.
I think you have explained your requirements fairly and you are obviously considering the safety of those potential attendees. You have explained your backup plan.
It appears this thread has moved away from the original point again which is to get prople in the water. I would love to come. Unfortunately on this occasion I am down in Devon diving Dartmouth (3 spaces if you cant get your trip filled, come and join me). I finally get to dive with Maria !
We expect to see dolphins and basking sharks but you never really know so a backup plan is always good.
As I said earlier Well done for making the effort and trying to do it right and well done for keeping your DO informed.
Good luck with your future diving / snorkling career. I hope you fill the trip and hope you have a great time. Upload some pictures and a report when you return to show the cynics how to do it properly.
