Hi all
I am currently resident in Australia, and will be for the next lifetime or so. Costs to become PADI Instructor=$4,200AUD total = unwiling to pay.
I am a member of the University Dive Club, and an independent club up in Melbourne. unfortunately, nobody else wants to pay that kind of money to become an instructor either.
which leaves me with a question - can people point me to any up to date info on BSAC clubs in Aus (eastern seaboard ideally), and what the criteria are for introduction and movement up the BSAC instructor levels ? I am aware that as a PADI DM with IANTD Adv EANx I would be eligible for a SALT to Dive Leader, but I am more interested in WHO (i.e what level) of BSAC personnel is qualified to teach instructors, and if anyone has an idea as to where I might find such an elusive person ! i have been around a few BSAC Divers here in Aus, and they come across very competently - hence my interest. That, and I can instruct people alot cheaper than using Put Another Dollar In material and standards....
in exchange, anyone wants any info on some of the best cold-water wreck diving in the southern hemisphere, let me know (i spent most of my weekend inside a world war one sub at about 140 feet !)

Wanted to keep the links seperate. Information on instructor grades can be found at this link.
However, BSAC does not permit individual instructors to train and award diver qualifications, the award of diver quals is done by a Branch 'Diving Officer' or a School 'Chief Instructor'. An individual can not be a BSAC School unlike some other agencies.

Hi Andy.
When I was visiting family in Melbourne a couple of years ago I made contact with Stuart Cannon who is the Oz BSAC Coach. he is very helpful and often dives with Victoria Divers (I dived a sub with them when I was there - I wonder if it is the same one). Although the other posts are right in that individuals cannot be a "school" you may find a school which is prepared to register with the BSAC and then you can offer the courses through them. A win/win - you get to teach BSAC, the BSAC gets another school plus exposure and the school increases its product range and penetration.
As far as doing the ITS courses necessary, I suggest talking to HQ, it is possible that a qualified ITS instructor who is visiting Oz could help with a bit of encouragement.

There are 2 BSAC branches in Melbourne. One is the Melbourne Branch and the other is at Monash University. The University club is v good. They tend to run Instructor courses most years as well as providing training. If you are a student or have graduated with a degree then you are eligable to join. The website for the branch is http://www.monash.edu.au/clubs/monuc/

However...if there's 8 or more of you then you could set up a BSAC branch and gain those facilities for within your group.
In answer to your other question about training as a BSAC instructor (or crossing over). There is info provided in Edward's link.
To get your hands on someone who could come to you and arrange/lead to provision that training (plus whatever else you needed whilst they were there). You should check out who acts as "Regional Coach" for Australia and contact them.
Regional Coach for Aus:
Stuart Cannon PO Box 1016, Moonee Ponds, Victoria 3039, Australia. Telephone: (+61) 3 93702229
