I have just bought a northern diver sea harrier dt5000 which comes with twin cam bands. I was woundering if you could use these with 12l dumpys with a manifold but without metal bands as Im on a very tight budget. I already have 2 seperate dumpy 12s so i would rather just buy a manifold for them and save the extra £50.

You can't really use unbanded twins with a manifold as the movement will stress the manifold too much. but even if you buy twining bands they are going to be less than optimal, too short, centre of gravity too far back, manifold too low on your back or cylinders too high.

I would suggest you dive them as independents until you can afford a set of cylinders optimised for twinsets

You might be better selling your surplus kit on ebay, and then looking to purchase a pair of banded/manifolded 12's second hand.

i wouldn't twin up dumpy's myself, but then I'm 6'6" tall. If you 4'0" then twinned dumpies might just work, but you'd be better just twinning up some 7's in that case!

If you are on a budget then use what you have.

Twin dumpies will be fine for now although can be a little short in the body
(all depends how tall you are). Be a bit savvy with trim and weights and
you can counterbalance a bit. Think Red Sea and all the holiday techies
that use whatever is there to indie twin, it might not be A1, but it will be
fine for now.

Forget manifolds. Fabric banding is for indies, so invest in another 1st
stage/reg and just use the two you have.

Im about 6 foot but i have been using dumpy 12s since I started and they seem to be fine for me so unless the wing changes how the botlles are in the water they should be alright. I already have a first stage and reg off my pony so I'll just change that around for the other tank. If I got some steel bands would I be able to use a manifold on the tanks (as long as they feel alright in the water)

Yep you could use a manifold and get bands for them, but TBH this is a
false economoy.

You've got everything to go Indie twins for now and if you do go manifolded,
i'd definatley go for a new set. By the time you've added up the manifold
and bands you could have sold the two dumpies and put that towards a
new unit.

Thanks I think I'll stay with indie twins for a while and save up a bit more money then see where to go from there :)

Before you spend money on more cyliders borrow a few different size sets then buy what suits you best. Remember with a manifolded set you must be able to reach the valves.

One thing that is putting me off indies is the thought of me going for a dive and forgetting to switch regs and using just one tank so Im off balance and then when Id drained that one I would think I have ran out and come rushing to the surface and then realsise I hav a full tank left.:(

Doesnt quite work like that.

Think about your average dive, imagine 210 bar and a reserve of thirds.
That's 140 bar of gas you'll use on the dive.

Now go indies and do the same dive.

You use 50 bar out of your right cylinder, then swap to your left.
Once you've done 50 bar in that one you switch back to the right and do
the other 40.

So all you've done is swap from one to the other and back again. Extremely
easy and something we learned at try-dive level :D
