I've just got back from diving in Tenerife in Los Gigantes, and what a plesant time I had.
I went with Los Gigantes Dive centre and must say that it was well worth the trip.
They look after your equipment for the duration of your holiday, so no need to lug all your gear around all the time.
The boat is less than 50mtrs from the dive centre, so another bonus.
The water was a little chilly 19 degrees, but a 5mm was just enough, I think another 3mm shorty over the top would have been better though.
There is an abundance of sea life and the Rays are amazing. On Saturdays and Wednesdays they feed the Rays, taking down a bin full of fish. The rays appear from all angles with the rare sighting of an Angel Shark!
The rock formations are also excellent and a wonder of boulders make the scenery fascinating itself.
At the moment Los Gigantes Dive Centre are celebrating their 20th year, so I have been informed by Sheila (the owner) that they now have special deals going. The first being free accomodation for groups of 6 or over, that take out a 6 dive package. The second being a deal - Your Buddy goes free! I would check this with Sheila but I geuss if your diving why not take your buddy for nothing?
Check out the link below for their web site:

I must say I will be back soon, and because the weather is hot all year round this is an ideal destination for winter diving too!

Oh wow!. Was just thinking about Los Gigantes the other day.
My wife and I were married 40 years ago this year and spent our Xmas 1969 honeymoon in the Los Gigantes hotel. Was a non diver then and anyway the hotel was the only building there in a desert of marked off roads.
Hopefully their offer will still be valid in September this year but my wife is a non diver. Haven't been back since. Love to go again. :D

Hi Eddie,
I would speak to Sheila, send her an email or something. She is just putting the deals together so they should be on the website soon.
I was thinking of going back in September, its my birthday, plus im a little luck as my mum lives around the corner in Playa de la arena.
Sheila told me about the deal when I finished diving, hopefully it will help them through the credit crunch too.
I met a lovely bunch of divers out there called the GODS (Golden Oldies Diving Society) from Ireland, Shayne Gray. What a great bunch of people, and excellent divers, if not the best ive come across. They had the free accomadation deal.
Los Gigantes is still quite Spanish, but there are now more restaraunts and bars, so not a desert any more, but just as hot!!!
Let me know how it goes.
All the best
Nick

I love Tenerife. It's where I qualified. I am going again in August and have booked up with Atlantic Divers in Costa Del Silencio. Geoff is an ex pat and it is a family run business. They also have accomadation but I booked a package holiday for the family, and it just so happens the dive centre is next door to the hotel.:D
It was May when I went last year, it was 19-20 degrees and I was fine in a 5mm down to 36 metres. (and I hate the cold)

I get cold easy, the other divers had 5mm's and shorties, or semi-dry wetsuits. I think it would have been a little more comfortable with the extra protection, but it wasnt to bad, even at 30m.
It was lovely and warm when you get out though, so you dry off pretty quick!
I think the benefit of the Los Gigantes Cliffes is that it shelters a large area from the wind. This makes diving possible most of the year round, if you start to head down the coast a little bit, the wind picks up, the currents get quite strong and it really makes the dive difficult or cancelled even.
Dont go to Tenerife, come dive with us in Lanzarote :D
Ok, so go to Tenerife then and another vote for Sheila
and Los Gigantes.
She actully did my open water dives on my PADI OW
all of over 15 years ago
Yes folks she's to blame for all these forum posts

I like to "sneak off" to Tenerife. I told the wife it was the ONLY way I could pass my AOW and Rescue Diver! :D
Any body wants a buddy for any foriegn dives I am always up for it for a week. I will be busy up to September ( got the kids hols etc..) but it only costs about £140 for a flight. I can get Accomadation for about £180, just the diving gear to pay for.

I can usually get accomadation cheap, if not for nothing most of the time. Bear me in mind, September is about perfect for me.

I have PM'd you Nick.
It would be nice a nice break just before the Xmas panic!:D .
I Reeeeaaaly fancy Egypt as well, perhaps next year.
I just got back from Los Gigantes yesterday and had two dives with Shiela and co. Got to say they are a decent lot and was impressed with their outfit and the way the went about their business. It was nice to see an O2 kit on board and to be given a good dive brief (in English) with the emphasis on safety at all times.
I thouroughly enjoyed both boat dives (one morning dive per day) in vis around 25 metres. Both dives centred around nice wall dives down to 25 metres approx (20 c temp) with plenty of rock formations and lots of marine life which included a nice common stingray ! Thoroughly enjoyable and I would be happy to recommend all aspects.

They've been there 20 years, so that says a lot about the centre.
Gavin the DL was in the Navy I think, he makes it look to easy though
We came across the odd octopus, Arrow Crabs, and Ive seen a moray eel, along with the odd cave etc.
Hopefully with the deals they will be ok through this tough time, I'd hate to see another centre disappear!

Have booked a fortnight in Los Gigantes. Staying in a self catering apartment there. Look forward to the diving as I wasn't a diver when I was there for my honeymoon 40 years ago this year.
We are both looking forward to the trip down memory lane. :)
BSAC Overseas Trip report about our trip IDC.
We are flying via Thompson Air and I have paid for an extra 5kg and meals for us both. Now have a whole 40kg between us :( . Thinking of diving in a 5 mil shortie - any advice on sea temp early Oct??
Cheers Stewart

IDC is Instructor Development Course and its a PADI product. I was assuming from your post you were going off to be trained as an Instructor.
