View Full Version : Closing Dive Centres in Sharm
Have just heard thgat about 14 dive centres may have been closed down in sham , thanks to Steve Sharm.
Anyone got any ideas which ones as I am off there in June and do not want to part with hard earned cash to find they have upped sticks.

do you know why? not enough divers to go around thesedays? im flying there on sunday aswell
My understanding is that the Egyptions closed down all the unlicensed/unregistered centres.
So in theory, those remaining should be the ligitimate / High quality establishments. Steve will probably add a comment if this is not the case!

im sure that will be a good thing then
Yes it will be a good thing from a safety point of view I suppose, but like all things in life it will have a cost - watch the Dive Centre prices go up. I have now decided to book with one of the big names.

Nothing to do with safety, 100 % to do with politics and backsheesh unfortunately.
CDWS throwing its weight around to bully people into paying up mainly. Centres closed are in some cases far safer than others they allow operating and so on. Still, nice new shiny cars the execs have now...
If you want a list of centres see here:
http://www.cdws.travel/diving/black-list-dive-centers.aspx
However for Dahab at least 3 of those are perfectly legal and still open yet on that list and several others that are CDWS members for 09 so "legal" arent as safe. Sharm may well be similar.
Dont make the mistake of thinking any of this is standards or safety related. That is unless you think needing to own xxx 8 litre cylinders, xxx size 12l and yyyy minimum capacity compressor are vital safety concerns. The big centres love it though, far easier for them to comply with some of the ludicrous demands than smaller ones.
